AN: Inspired by Coldplay's "Us Against the World". A little AU-ish idea that I haven't been able to shake.

Disclaimers: I own none of it.

Roses in the Rain: Prologue

In my heart she left a hole

She is not the type of person who ever wishes she could forget things that have happened in her life; events, moments or mistakes that she has made. She believes that everything can be learned from – everything should be learned from. She believes that everything in her life has brought her to where she is – has made her who she is.

And she wouldn't change a thing.

Given the opportunity, she would not go back in time to change something. The impossibility of time travel aside, she understands that she would not be able to control whether things changed for the better or the worse. Who is to say that change, just for the sake of change, is any better? It could potentially alter the outcomes of too many situations and events completely unrelated to her initial predicament.

Maura Isles does not wish for "do-overs".

But she wishes, with an ache so deep in her heart that she can barely function – an ache that settles in the core of her existence, the root of her being; an ache that, unless she consciously distracts herself from every day, could sink her heart to depths even Davy Jones himself would not dare venture towards – she wishes they could escape.

She wishes they could pull themselves out of this heartbreaking chasm.

She wishes they could just forget about it all.

And start again.

She wishes she could go back in time – to the exact moment where the trouble began. And do it right this time. And instead of losing this battle against themselves – instead of giving in to all of their insecurities and misconceptions and the endless hurt and watching their relationship – their beautiful friendship – deteriorate and erode in the rain, drop by torturous drop…

She wishes she could go back and see the beauty of the way they fit together, despite all of the odds being stacked against them.

She wishes they could float away

In their own little world

And just start again.
