It was one of those odd, flighty kind of days. The type of day that was both warm and cool at the same time, with the breeze and the endless blue sky staring down at you, appreciative of YOUR appreciation, but at the same time, seemingly asking: "What are you doing out here? Are you wasting time? Don't you have something important to be doing...?"
Heero Yuy wondered the same thing, a lone figure bent over slightly at the fence which was as tall as the better half of his chest. This whole 'stay undercover by attending a local school' thing seemed to be a pointless plan, especially since that guy attracted so much attention. A real regular ladies man. Something Heero neither liked nor disliked. At least that other guy remembered that the mission had priority above everything else.
"Heero! Buddy!" Mmhmm. Well, it didn't sound like there were any girls tagging along behind him. Saying nothing, he turned, ever so slightly, making eye-contact with the other pilot. "You been here all this time? It's a shame, you missed Artisia's birthday cake." Duo smacked his lips in an exaggerated fashion. "If you really don't like her that much, I could've still brought you a piece."
"It's not that I don't like her. I just don't want to mingle those people."
"Yeah? Well, maybe you should just itry/i. Not that there's anything wrong with keeping to yourself, pal," Duo added quickly, seeing Heero tilting his head towards him, glaring a little. "Although you can't stay alone forever. Especially after this mission is over and done with."
"I don't think there will be an 'after this mission'." Heero said quietly. After all, in war, lives were disposable, and it didn't matter if you were an ordinary OZ soldier or if you were an ace Gundam pilot.
"Hey now, that's only if we screw up. Except for you maybe, I know how fond you are of throwing yourself into danger like a reckless idiot."
"Look, you don't get it." Heero was getting impatient. "I don't have anything but this Gundam. I don't have anything but my missions and this war. Maybe you do. I don't care. I just want to get this... over and done with." With that, he walked briskly away from the other pilot. It was funny, getting all riled up at something so small. He supposed that was the effect a person like him had on others, although he didn't know for sure. This was the most interaction he had had with another human being since he could remember.
Behind him, there was silence, except for a few birds chirping and the fluttering of the school's flag in the background. Suddenly, Duo called out. "Well, you have me! Don't forget that."
Heero couldn't help but grin slightly. "No... I won't be able to forget about you."
END
A/N: Phew, it's been a while since I wrote Gundam stuff. Even though I rather enjoy this pairing, I'm still holding out for a post-UC series that isn't, y'know, totally gay.
