The world was quiet. At one point, it allowed the midnight to linger about the land and play for as long as it could. She stared at its trinkets of gold scattered across its vast playground. Its best friend, the moon, was no where to be found.
"Kaito…"
She held his hand tightly and never wanted to let go. In fact, she was scared. To be apart from him again would be much more painful. She didn't want to see him walk far into where she can never reach his hand.
"Hmm…?"
She shrugged at the fact that she might lose him again. His presence, his memories and his heart would shatter hers.
"I'm hungry."
He laughed lightly at her and her smile dragged along a bright blush on her cheeks. She never realized how light his laugh was. It was probably because whenever he did, he always seemed to tease her and his insults always and never failed to annoy her. Even so, it made her feel a little more worried than relieved.
"I'll grab something from the convenience store."
He gave her a warm smile and stood from his seat. She stood up from her seat on impulse and tried to regain her balance.
"Wait! I'll come with you."
She didn't want him away from her. Don't go away. You might not find your way back again, she meant behind those fabricated words. He laughed again but now, even more lightly with a hint of mischief in them.
"If you stick with me the whole time, you might turn to mold and you'll never get your food. Besides, we haven't had dinner yet. I'll come back."
You don't understand. He walked away from their spot slowly. What if you don't come back? She could hear his footsteps echoing on the soft and grainy bed of tan. Later on, it was washed away by the rhythms of the waves and she could no longer hear them. It was silent but the feeling of panic and paranoia was partying in her head. She wouldn't be able to bear it if he never came back ever again. Jewels fell rapidly from her sad eyes and turned the scenery into a watercolor painting.
"Why are you crying, my dear mermaid princess?"
She glanced to see his face but all she could project was a mixture of colors which blended onto the scenery. He wiped her tears away and held her near his chest. From her position, she could feel his breath touch her bare neck. She hugged him and heard him whisper something into her ear but it was too soft for her to hear. From the corner of her eye, she saw something fall from the sky.
"Kaito! It's starting!"
Midnight must've felt her sadness and showed her one of its beautiful tricks which never failed to amaze her. Deep inside, she wished with all her heart the one special thing she always wished.
"What did you wish for?"
They both laughed at the question as they said it in unison. He ceased his laughter and watched her giggle fade into a sweet smile. She saw content in his eyes. He waited for her to speak while she waited him. Finally, she spoke the single word which surprised him completely.
Eternity.
