Disclaimer: I don't any of it but if I did it would definitely be Alex O'Loughlin.
Spoilers for "Heihei" – just a quick one shot on Danny's thoughts on his ex. Would love your reviews!
"You want to hit Side Street? It's on me."
Danny looked in the rear view mirror as Steve drove away from his ex's house feeling the slow warmth spreading through his usually angry heart.
The truth was that he had no idea what any of the last days' events meant, if anything. Ok, maybe that wasn't entirely true. The detective in him knew a few things to be true.
One – the way he and his ex had met had NOT been the accident he'd always believed it to be. This, in and of itself, was a revelation that could not be ignored by his stupid male ego brain. When Steve had asked him how he had "gotten" her, he knew exactly what the taller, better looking, know it all man had meant. Heck, in the back of his mind, he had always wondered how he had gotten her too. It wasn't every day that a beautiful, intelligent woman chose him over the next guy. The accident had always made the explanation easier, more believable, even in his mind. But this new knowledge left him wondering if maybe this wasn't the only thing he'd been short sighted on.
Second – she had crashed her expensive car to help their case. Not only would she have to explain that to her current husband (and he'd love to hear how that went down), but she'd also have to wait for it to be fixed. Oh sure, they had other cars she could use but he knew she loved that car. She had never made it a big secret that having money, having things, was important to her. Like he had basically told Steve earlier, he had always thought it was one of the biggest reasons she'd left him. He would never be able to give her half of what she had now on a cop's salary. Not that he'd admit it out loud…but there were times that he was even grateful for it, for Grace's sake.
But she'd crashed her luxury car for HIM, to help him. It blew his mind…and he couldn't help but wonder why she had done it.
And to take it one step further, she had even helped them get some evidence for the case. Unbelievable…but then he'd never said she wasn't a smart cookie…incredibly frustrating, bitchy and aggravating, but smart.
Three – she'd told him she would call him, not email, but call. To some people that tiny little detail might have gone undetected but not him. She had to know how he hated that damn email when she'd suggested it to her lawyer in the first place. To tell him that she would call was HUGE. It felt almost like a first date. Only it wasn't.
Yeah, he wasn't exactly sure what was going on here and probably it would never come to anything more than what it was right now. Two people who had a daughter together trying to find a better place for the two of them to meet halfway…but damn it felt good and he was going to do what he could to keep that feeling just a little bit longer.
The Big Kahuna, Karma or whatever the hell people believed it to be, had just given him a gift and he was a lot of things but ungrateful wasn't usually one of them. He just didn't know how to feel about actually looking forward to her call.
Looking in the rear view mirror one last time, he wondered how fast Steve could get to Side Street so he wouldn't have to think about it for a little bit longer.
