This happens right after the Yotsuba arc.

Disclaimer: Death Note's not mine. Shocking, I know.

Circumference

He had a pen in his hand and the Death Note open in front of him, and he was watching the second hand tick out the circumference of his watch. The situation was familiar and produced a comfortable nostalgia. He was Kira; he meted out his judgment upon criminals. And this name, the one he had just written, was that of the most terrible criminal he'd judged yet. It was very satisfying.

The seconds passed so slowly.

Suddenly there was a noise from the door; L came in. "Oh, Light-kun…"

Light's first instinct was to hide the Note—but there were only a few seconds left, so it seemed rather pointless. Instead he kept his eyes on his watch.

L approached, his eyes even wider than normal. "What are you doing, Light-kun?" he questioned, voice trembling a little.

Light did not reply. There were fifteen seconds left.

"Then the thirteen-day rule is false," L stated, and waited for confirmation.

But Light gave a harsh laugh. "The thirteen-day rule doesn't matter right now," he replied. Ten seconds.

L came closer. Abruptly he gasped as he saw the name Light had written:

Yagami Light

"Light-kun…!"

Five seconds. Light found himself smirking in satisfaction. "Kira is a monstrous criminal," he reminded L, "whom we must stop at all—"

Zero seconds. The final tick of the second hand echoed ominously, and—

—Yagami Light awoke, terrified and gasping for breath.

It took him a few moments to sort dream from reality; the first thing he did was shoot a panicked glance at his watch—but no, that part was from the dream. That had just been a nightmare.

Light sat up in bed, rested his face in his hand, and began to laugh. It was a shaky, nervous, self-mocking laugh, tinged with the note of insanity.

Kira hadn't had one of those dreams for quite a while…

Man, I hate ff.n formatting. The "Yagami Light" is supposed to be indented, but it's not cooperating.
