Merry was a small but eager young House Elf who lived with his old and fragile master, Geoffrey Roberts. Merry, despite being small for his age, loved everything about his life. Mr Roberts was not like most other wealthy wizards. He was kind and caring and it did not matter to him that House Elves were seen as inferior creatures used as slaves. Geoffrey loved Merry and only really had him because he was lacking company. Merry was given to Mr Roberts as a gift from all his friends when his wife, Penelope, passed away.
Over the years, Geoffrey grew more and more to like Merry and gave him privileges that no ordinary house elf would ever dream of having. on the 17th of April every year, Geoffrey would give him a present to celebrate Merry's day. The day in which Merry could enjoy doing nothing because he never had a proper birthday. Merry had a peculiar obsession with hats. He had acquired Hats of every shape and size. Geoffrey always gave Merry a new hat for his special day. Merry's favourite hat was the one he had first received the year after he became Geoffrey's house elf. It was a deerstalker hat. Like the one Merry's favourite muggle book character, Sherlock Holmes, wore. Merry was into that kind of stories, adventure and detective.
On Geoffrey's birthday, Merry would always by him extra sherbet lemons from Honeydukes and would always attempt to wear all his hats at once to try and make him laugh. He had only managed it once but ten seconds later the pile balancing on his head, collapsed and buried Merry underneath. This was Geoffrey's most memorable time with Merry.
They both lived joyfully in a meager cottage outside the wonderful village of Hogsmeade. Merry would often wander down to Honeydukes and buy more sherbet lemons as they were Geoffrey's favourite. Merry was quite popular with the people who lived in Hogsmeade and would always get a kind 'Hello!' or 'Good Morning, my friend!' whenever he went into the village. He even had friends from the school nearby: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Some were the students that inhabit there but some however were the House Elves who worked in the kitchens. Merry's friends would often try and sneak him into the castle using an invisibility charm so he could visit them. He admired their efforts dearly.
One Christmas, Merry's friends even knitted him a multi-coloured scarf that he loved to wear. It was too short for any human to wear but it was also too long for Merry. He didn't mind it though; all he cared about was the effort and the time they put into making it. This was why those who knew him thought he was the greatest friend in the world.
