Irene's pov

I was sitting at the table in my home. I had to get ready for work but I wasn't having it easy at the moment. It had been a whole month since Erza moved out and got a job in the construction field but to top things off her job allowed her to travel all over the world which made me proud but at the same time I was lonely. Erza was my only daughter and it has always been us taking on the world.

I sighed.

I hate being an empty nest Mother.

Just then I finished getting ready for work and left.

I worked as a surgeon and for my free time I was a story writer. Thanks to that combination I got to travel a lot around the world.

However since Erza left I have put myself on call for any urgent things that might come up.

When I got to work I went to my office to check for incoming surgeries. I had one that was in a couple of hours and it was for heart transplant.

Not only did I work as a skilled surgeon but I was always called from other hospitals to help out in surgeries and helping with new steps in lessons to better medicine. The main hospital I worked for was Alvarez but I would get called to others from all over the place. When Erza was younger I would take her with me since I didn't trust this title 'babysitter' like other mothers did.

I went to take a small walk before the operation.

During the time I was walking I would sneak away to visit the children that were in the hospital. I couldn't help it and they knew me as Doctor Irene because my last name was too hard for them to say.

I would bring little stuffed animals for them and from time to time some of the kids would hug me. I did this whether the parents were in the room or not.

After the walk I went back to my office and called Erza.

I was lucky if she answered because she informed me that her job was rather loud so she wouldn't hear the phone.

I was sent to voicemail only to learn that it was full so then I called a friend of mine.

After a couple of rings there was an answer.

"Hey Irene."

"Hello Anna."

"What's up? Where are you?"

"I'm at my office."

"I see, got another surgery to handle?"

"Yeah, I'm certain that it will go well."

"Well you did so many of these things and you are a new empty nest mother."

"I am, and it sucks."

"I'm sure you'll get used to it."

"I thought so too but I still wish that Erza would at least visit."

"Don't worry, I'm sure that she will she just needs to make sure that she can take care of herself first."

" I just feel lonely. I don't want to be an empty nest mother."

"You visit children's hospitals, don't you?"

"I do but I can't take a child home with me."

"Yeah, don't."

"August told me that I was too much of a child lover to do that."

"I see. How about volunteering in a different country?"

"I would but I think I would end up taking all the children back home with me."

"I now see why August wouldn't let you do that."

"Aw, you're on his side? Traitor."

"I'm sure you'll get through this, Irene."

The call was over after that and I left to the operating room and got suited up. My team and I went to the now sleeping patient and got to work.

When the operation was done it was a success and I left the room to get cleaned up.

I went to my office only to see that there was nothing left but I still made sure that they had me on call in case if something happened.

Since I was on call and a top surgeon I was allowed to go home so I got my bag and left.

As I was headed out August stopped me.

"Handling the empty nest well?"

I looked at him.

"Not really. I'm headed home for now but I'm on call if something happens."

"Yes, Irene."

With that I left home.

When I got to my home I got freshened up and ready for bed. I checked my phone only to see that I got a text from Erza.

E: Hey Mom, sorry I missed your call. Good news is I'll be in town for this project so I'll be able to stop by. Don't party too hard while I'm out.

I smiled and texted back.

I: Why would I party? Feel free to stop by any time.

I had my phone turned up and went to sleep after that.

I was woken up from my phone ringing and answered.

"Hello? Irene speaking."

On the other line I heard.

"Irene, this is Nienhart. Come to the hospital. It's Erza."

My eyes widen and I was fully awake now.

"On my way."

I got out of the bed and got dressed then rushed to the hospital.
