Jane's first real crush was Dominic from Point Mouette and after the following disaster Skye promised to herself to keep her sister as far away as possible from any further relationship drama. That was a quite difficult and sometimes almost life threatening task, considering all the idiotic guys at her school that wanted to go out with Jane.
Skye had always thought of Jane as too kind and almost naïve when it came boys, in particular the ones who dared to express their undying love towards her.
That was one of the causing facts of being in this unpleasant situation right now. The lady with the straight, raven-black hair had eyed her suspiciously twice already and the man with the plaid hat seems to wonder about her behavior too. Although it may be that she is imagining that, plaid hats always remind her of Sherlock Holmes. She sighs and pushs a blond strand of hair back behind her ear that had become loose in the course of time that she had been spending in this bus. There is no time for her to worry about why not bringing a hair tie or questioning why anyone would use public transportation systems, she clearly need to focus.
"The next stop is Cameron Middle School." The monotone voice of a woman lets everyone know. Following is a rustling of rain coats that are rubbed against each other caused by people exiting the bus.
Skye scoots further left on her seat, trying to get a good view of Jane who had been sitting on the other end of the bus, fortunately facing the front of it and not her. Unfortunately, Jane is nowhere to be seen. That leads to only one conclusion: She got off the bus at this stop.
"What on earth would they want at the middle school?"
It is probably only due to her quick reflexes that Skye gets off the bus without any major injuries. People have not been very happy about her decision to hurry to the exit, especially because she bumps into a bunch of them. Not very inconspicuously, but whatever. She can't risk losing Jane.
The second one who asked Jane out on a date was Pearson's brother Jackson.
Anyone, besides Jane, knew that this date would not turn out to be great. Perhaps, that was due to the fact that the day prior, Jackson proclaimed he would get a Penderwick sister to kiss him without getting punched afterwards.
Needless to say, Skye followed them to the ice cream shop and watched.
Watched when Jackson tried to be romantic by letting Jane taste his watermelon flavored ice cream.
Watched when Jane tried to hide her disgust towards watermelon.
Watched when Jackson inched closer to Jane and Jane inching further away.
Shoved Jackson off the bench when he tried to kiss Jane.
At least that one didn't get punched.
Skye spies Jane walking around the huge stone wall that reads "Welcome to Cameron Middle School!". The guy who she is apparently on a date with leads her towards the school's playground which is empty at this time of day. Skye pulls her coat closer to her body, it is getting quite chilly with all that rain soaking her clothes. Her camouflage hat helps her blend in with the bush that she ducks behind as Jane starts turning around in the rain. Soon enough she gets her company to jump and turn around in the rain with her.
Skye would have smiled at their childish behavior and them simply laughing and having so much fun by running around at getting totally soaked if this wasn't a serious situation. She leans a little further backwards, hoping to blend in even more. Her new hiding spot lets her catch a glimpse of the swings.
Jane thought of it as entirely romantic when some guy in her PE class invited her to sit on the swings with him. It was the lunch break of the last day before summer started and her last day of Middle School. In her opinion, it just had to be an amazing day.
In Skye's opinion it wasn't.
Throughout the whole summer Jane talked about nothing else than that lunch break that she had spent talking to the guy in her PE class. She described him as dazzling, clever and simply perfect. The best thing about her day was the moment at the end of lunch when he took her hand to accompany her to her next class.
Rosalind said that he sounded like a really nice guy.
Jane's first day of High School showed that he wasn't.
Mr Penderwick had taken Skye and Jane to school because they were running late and missed the bus. (According to Skye, that was entirely Jane's fault.) The sound of the early bell reminded them to make their way to their classes. Jane felt confident about her first class, Honors English, and had already spent many thoughts on how to improve her writing skills when she clapped eyes on her PE-crush.
She forced herself to blink. Her vision focused on the scene in front of her. She blinked again.
Skye saw her sister startling at the sight of a random guy covering a poor girl in sloppy kisses.
This time it wasn't Skye who punched a boy.
Skye smiles at the memory. Maybe Jane hadn't done such a bad job of protecting herself from boys who don't honestly like her as much as she hoped for.
"This guy seemed to be a little different." She thinks as she watches him remove his jacked to wrap it around a laughing Jane. He gestures towards the swings and Skye sharply breathes in. She won't be invisible to them if they make their way towards the slides.
Luck seems to be on her side today; Jane shakes her head and points towards the little open-air-theatre. It was supposed to host memorable plays that were initiated by the students but not enough initiative lead to it simply being a place to hang out or seek shelter if it was raining.
The two of them are now sitting there, eventually enjoying the stop of rain drizzling over them.
Skye curses herself for not taking her camouflage umbrella.
They seem to enjoy the company of each other and spend some time talking.
One could say it takes 12 mins and 19 seconds to be exact. Not that anyone keeps count on their watch.
After 12 mins and 19 seconds Jane inches closer to the guy who's face Skye can barely see from her hiding spot.
It takes a few additional seconds before they kiss.
Skye waits a few more just to make sure that Jane is okay and until the feeling of confidence towards Jane's and that guy's relationship had strengthened in her mind. Then she quietly gets up to not attract any attention and walks back to the bus stop.
"Your sister is gone." The boy dressed in a blue shirt whispers to the girl who is wearing his jacket.
"I need to tell her that there is absolutely no need to protect me from you." Jane whispers back and smiles a little more, until she gazes into his dreamy eyes and forgets the world around her for the second time.
