Really short snippet that struck me randomly. Had I the talent, I would make an entire Harry Potter AU on this. However, as I readily admit I have neither the time nor the knowledge to do justice to J. K. Rowling's universe, I leave this as an open idea.
Anyone who cares to make a fic on it, LET ME KNOW! :D I'd love to see other views on the possibility, be it long fic or oneshot.
Snape had expected Potter's boy to walk into the room. Prideful air, pompous walk, snobby nose and sneaky, derisive eyes. No doubt he'd inherited the same perfectly straight dark locks and cheeky blue eyes as his father's. A royal snitch; prankster; cruel-hearted, devious freak who would win the sympathy of all his classmates and the headmaster as well.
He hadn't expected Lily's boy to walk into the room. Ginger hair just curling at the base of the neck, incorrigible freckles on a mere smudge of a nose, and green, green eyes, roving shy and uncertain around a room full of the unknown. The Granger girl was leading him to a table, and Snape almost confused him for another Weasley.
But by Merlin, those eyes. It was Lily on her first day of school. Confident but anxious, never knowing what new magic she would discover next.
Lily had never known she was a witch. James had been surefire and arrogant from the start.
This was Lily's boy.
Snape watched surreptitiously over his stack of papers, observing the companions Potter had chosen. The Granger girl, obviously – with her smart mouth and knowledge, she assured him of a year's worth of homework assistance. Longbottom, surprisingly, though Snape realized he should not be astonished: Lily had always favored the outcastes. A blond waif introduced the thieving habits of Nargles. Weasley slid in at the side, doubtlessly adopting Potter as a long lost twin. Even Malfoy hung around, uncertain what to make of this adaption of "The Great Harry Potter."
It seemed the students naturally gravitated around the boy. There was no snippy coolness or facetiousness to drive them away. He was Lily through and through, and something long buried and forgotten ached inside of Snape as he watched.
Green eyes shifted his way and Snape returned to his papers, quill scratching of its own accord as his mind wandered.
He had expected Potter's boy to walk into the room. Aloof and ungrateful; snide and unwilling to learn.
He hadn't expected to see Lily reborn in her son.
And from that moment, Snape knew he would defy every nuance of Dumbledore's orders.
He would sacrifice everything to protect Lily's final treasure.
