A/N: After about fifteen conversations with my friends, I had to. Sorry. (But seriously. It's just not right.) If you recognize it, I don't own it.

Two Years

The Doctor rubbed a tear out of his eye, shocked and slightly embarrassed by the display of humanity. He shut the door and followed his favorite couple into the dining room, where he stopped.

"There's only three places," he pointed out, looking at Amy suspiciously.

"Yeah?" Amy shot back at him. "There's only three of us. So it works. River's not coming, if that's what you mean."

"I'd guessed that. Prison, you know. It's rather difficult to go to Christmas dinner with the family. Why are there only three of us?"

"Um…" Amy raised an eyebrow, trying to figure out where he was going with this. "Because you finally came round, that's why."

"It's been two years," he continued, his voice suggesting that he'd either not heard her or had chosen to ignore her. "Why are there only three places? Look, never mind, we'll talk about it later."

"What's he on about?" Rory asked, appearing with a platter of turkey.

"I have no idea," snorted Amy.

Christmas dinner passed with no more mention of the three place settings. The Doctor regaled them with tales of his travels and the Ponds passed along news of River and stories of their life now. Only when everything had long been put away, and the fire in the grate had died down, did the Doctor stand and announce that he had to get going. All the sitting still and acting human was making him itch.

"I'll come again in a couple years for Christmas, if not before," he announced, and then turned to them with an admonishing finger and stern expression. "And there better be some little Ponds for me to spoil when I get back. You could've had at least two by now, and let me tell you, I am extremely upset with the pair of you. Right?"

Amy and Rory just gaped at him. That was what had been bothering him all night?

"Right," the Doctor agreed with himself. "Bye, then."

And he left, sauntering away into the snowy night. Only after the sounds of the TARDIS had faded away did either of them find words.

"Did he just …"

"Yep. Yes he did."

"Oh. Well. Right, then."
