Hearts of Gold

Under the spreading chestnut tree
I sold you and you sold me
Our nation's lost, our souls are sold
Under the feudal age of old

Honor, Duty, Brav'ry, Pride
Bullets pierce the fighter's side
Summer soldier fallen, struck
General's horses rear and buck
Cannon shot, the clouds of smoke
Weapons of the oppressor's yoke
Sunshine patr'ot bathed in gore
Lose the battle- to fight another war

Our towns are burned, village ravaged
Invader, brute, redcoat, savage
We try to fight, but bruised and beaten
Swallowed up, our country's eaten
The motherland, conjoined at last
Our food is stolen- we scheme and fast
From ashes we crawl, to rise against
Refusing to by Fate be bent

Uprising starts, a human tide
A hail of grapeshot, cannon-side
Rebellion stemmed, freedom crushed
Sea of red is barely brushed
Our plans repelled, our plot in vain
Hope replaced: despair and pain

When all has ended, stories told
Of men of iron, hearts of gold
Forced to swing for freedom's sake
Remembered still in scarlet's wake
We honor, consecrate this land
Under slavery, oppression's hand

We strive to live, to fight, to dream
A world where nothing's what it seems
For freedom lost, freedom to gain
Long live Liberty: tyrants' bane
Trees are nourished with blood of slain
We shake our collar, our bonds, our chains

Under the spreading chestnut tree
We dedicate our love for this country
We may be lost, but they are free-
for America, for liberty!
