Chilled air was blowing through the cracks in the floorboard. Moonlight streamed into the sitting room from the tall windows, their curtains softly rustling. The entire house, interior and exterior, was Victorian, filled with plush furniture and items. This eerie estate was the former residence of a widow, who passed away. With no close friends or direct family, it was decided that her distant relatives, Len and Rin Kagamine, would watch the house until its fate was determined.

Asleep on the couch, his chest rising and falling, was Len; his blond hair was untidy and his black vest and shorts were a size or two larger than they should have been. Rin noticed this as she inspected him from the other seat. A purple bow to match her violet dress was tied into her short hair.

She was growing bored; the rhythmic ticking of the ornate grandfather clock stopped sounding song-like, and was now annoying her. Something about the house made her feel like she was going to lose it at any moment, and she wondered if it was from lack of sleep. Before coming here, the twins had already had insomnia issues, only recently developed.

Rin quietly tiptoed away from the snoring Len. She walked into the library, where wall-to-well shelves crowded the room. Her shoes hitting the tile made a noise that echoed off the chandelier. Even though she had a passion for books, this particular collection was giving her an uneasy feeling. She kept examining it, stopping as her eyes laid upon a desk in the left corner. She pulled her skirt up and dashed towards it.

It seemed old, but was well-maintained. On top of it was a blue leather notebook, closed. Once there had been a stamped title, but it had faded. Despite the bad feelings Rin was receiving from the book, she was somehow drawn to it. Her nimble fingers swiftly opened it to its first page. To her surprise, there was nothing; no writing or drawings or anything. She eagerly flipped through the entire notebook; still nothing. "Hmph..." Her voice was disappointed.

Instantly as she got to the last page, it was pulled by an unknown force back to the desktop. Rin yelped and released it. Its pages rapidly switched before coming to rest on the first page. Without a person or pen in sight, neat handwriting began appearing as if being written right before her eyes. Rin gasped, her eyes glued to it.

I am not alone. My company is not only you. Leave now. This place is dangerous.

Gulping, Rin went to pick it up, but as she did, more was written.

Leave this here. If you need to see it again, you will know. Bye.

Glad to leave, her heart racing, Rin fled the library. She felt herself breaking out in a cold sweat; this was unlike her, she thought. She didn't want Len to think her a coward; she hoped he wasn't yet awake. As she re-entered the sitting room, she was relieved to see her brother as deep in slumber as she had left him. She exhaled, content that at least one thing wasn't going wrong; but she knew everything was getting worse.
