Author's Notes: This Drabble (500 words or less) is in response to a challenge by Kitty Shan for the website: Hunk's Corner. The challenge word is "Surrender."
Keith eyed the princess as they circled each other. Each held a sword and was breathing heavily. Keith cautiously used the back of his hand to wipe the sweat from his brow and to get the hair from his eyes. "So, never give up, never surrender. That's your motto?"
Laughter drifted across to him. "In this battle against Zarkon, it has to be my motto. OUR motto."
Keith saw the tension in her stance. She was carrying a heavy burden. He had hoped some time sparring together would give her a chance to let go and give her an outlet to talk. The need to defeat Zarkon was fueling her attacks and while it was good to get that out, he didn't want that to be the sole thing that she took away from this session.
It would be difficult as the princess had a keen eye for battle tactics and was more than his match in this arena, but he felt that he could get her off-balance. A smile formed on his face as he closed the distance between them. Their swords clashed and slid against each other until they were both pointed up to the ceiling, the hilts pressed close between them. "Allura?" he asked with his teeth gritted.
"Yes," came her equally strained reply.
"Have you ever been kissed?" It was only a moment that her concentration faltered but it was enough for him to disarm her which had been his intention with the question.
She looked at him with anger in her eyes. "That was unfair!"
"Maybe, maybe not," he countered as he tossed his sword to the side. Getting into a fighting stance he asked, "Want to keep going?"
A fire sparked in Allura's eyes. "Remember the motto?"
He laughed. Of course he hadn't forgotten, he had just heard it. But he planned on getting a surrender from her before they were finished.
Twenty minutes later Keith was starting to have some doubts as his body ached and his breath came in gasps at times. But then Allura lunged and Keith grabbed her arm and pulled her around bringing her back into hard contact with his chest. Gripping her tightly with one arm he softly whispered, "Never surrender, Princess?"
"Never," she said after a moment's hesitation.
He wasn't sure why, but she seemed slightly less aggressive as he held her. The smile crept back on his face. "Never say never, Allura."
"What-" she began to ask and then stopped as she burst into a fit of giggles.
With his free hand, Keith continued to tickle her.
Allura gasped out, "Stop it, Keith! Stop! I give up!"
Keith stopped the giggle inducing motions and wrapped both arms around her, "Sometimes it's okay to surrender." He squeezed a little tighter finding that he liked the feel of her in his arms. "When it's to the right person."
"Princess Allura and Paladins to the bridge!" As they rushed from the room each had something to think about.
