The wind caressed her face and down her body, making the long silk strands of her auburn hair fly everywhere. She stood on top of the cliff in the midst of wildflowers, soaking in the sun with her face tilted upward and arms thrown back. She was incredibly beautiful and they didn't know what to make of her. This stranger they came upon.
They all gathered there at the edge of the clearing merely on whim and curiosity. The sweet haunting melody they just so happened to hear made them all turn their heads in wonder. They came to an agreement to follow it and see where it led. After all they finished their mission a week early and had plenty of time left to spare. The four of them, Naruto, Sai, Sakura, and Kakashi.
And what they found was a girl no younger nor older then the three teenagers. Naruto was having a pretty hard time keeping still and even when Sakura pinched him, he couldn't resist jumping out of the vines that hidden him.
"Hello!"
The girl turned around so fast that she almost tripped. In front of her was this blonde, exuberant male in bright orange. And not only that, he had other odd companions stumbling behind him.
"Naruto, you big dummy!"
"Ow! Why'd you hit me Sakura?"
"Because dick less, you weren't supposed to give away our location."
Strange. She didn't know what to think of these newcomers. One of them had bright pink hair which she was sure was natural and the other boy had a smile plastered on his face for no reason. The tallest male didn't even say a word but she wasn't sure if he could. His mask covered almost all of his face and what it didn't, his headband did. Then suddenly they all faced her at the exact same time making her take a step back. Creepy.
"Um…please excuse us. My name is Sakura, this knucklehead is Naruto, this is Sai and our Kakashi sensei. We didn't mean to interrupt you but we were just curious. We left from the nearest town from here one day ago so we didn't think we'd meet any civilians out here."
"Ah, it's okay! I'm actually a wanderer."
A wanderer huh? This little petite girl? Kakashi couldn't believe it. He tried to detect whether she was lying or not but couldn't tell. He couldn't help it though, when he got caught up in her dark brown eyes. He really could drown in it.
"So does the wanderer have a name?"
Sai's sharp voice cut through the clearing. He still had no expression on but inside he was quite confused. How did someone he just meet make his stomach churn and not necessarily in a bad way?
"Mai."
Finally Kakashi spoke.
"Just Mai?"
"Yes. I have no last name."
"Do you have a place to go to tonight?" Naruto asked. His head tilted to the side as he watched her from his sky blue eyes.
"Not particularly. I go where the wind leads me."
"Then you have to come with us to Konoha!"
And so that was how Mai found herself standing in front of the massive gates shielding the hidden leaf village.
