Based on episode 'Hanging On'. I do not own Chicago fire or an of the characters. Warning character death.
Severide had watched as Casey struggled against the door, the fire threatening to burst through any second. Finally the man crawled through the window, but still Casey refused to move until they were out of the way. Severide shielded the man as best he could from the hot flames as they burst through the window. When they heat had finally died away Severide looked up to see if Casey had made it out, but he was nowhere in sight. Severide knew that if Casey wasn't on the ladder then the chances he was alive were slim. He had looked down towards the bottom of the building and saw everyone desperartely watching. He hadn't wanted to, but he knew he had to check.
As he climbed back up the ladder he remembered Andy Darden's death. Severide had been devastated by the news just like the rest and had blamed the death of his friend on Casey. Before Darden's death they had all been friends. Of course him and Casey had still butted heads, but at the end of the day they were still friends. Now as he climbed the remaining steps of the ladder he wonder how Casey had felt. Matt had actually seen the whole thing. In fact he had barely managed to get out of the way.
Finally Severide stood in front of the window, taking a deep breath he looked inside... They had all been heartbroken that day. Poor Gabbie had cried so hard. Leslie had tried to comfort her through her own tears. All the men had tear tracks down their dirty faces. Even Chief Boden wiped away tears.
Now weeks after Casey's death Severide laid in bed his mind replaying the horrible events of that day. Silent tears slid down his cheeks because now he finally understood how Matt had felt after Darden's death. Now he only wished he could tell him he was sorry, but it was to late. Lt. Matthew Casey was dead and he had died doing what he did best, fighting fires and saving lives.
A/N Can you believe what I just did! I killed one of my favorite characters! :( I can't believe myself :( . This short story wouldn't leave me alone so I gave in and wrote it. R&R tell me what you think good or bad.
Mess.
