Death Note, Ryuzaaki/Light. Ryuzaaki and Light engage themselves in a game of metaphorical poker. I know it's sort of a crack pairing, but the plot bunnies wouldn't shut up until it was written.

DISCLAIMER: I do not own Death Note. If I did, Matsuda would be my plushie.

"No date with Misa-san today, Yagami-kun?"

Yagami Light looked up from his book- Tactics of the Twenty-First Century Police Force- to find the world renowned detective staring at him. Light twitched slightly. It was unnerving, the way that Ryuzaaki's eyes pierced their subject with such an unblinking stare.

"No, no date today," responded Light, turning back to his book. The chain that bound the two together made a clanking noise as Light flipped a page.

"Hn," said Ryuzaaki thoughtfully, pulling a deck of cards from his pocket. "How about a game of poker, then?"

Light paused, then slowly glanced back upwards. Ryuzaaki was crouched in his odd position, thumbing the playing cards, creating a buzzing sound. "Fine," Light acquiesced, setting the book beside him on the couch where the two sat.

Ryuzaaki dealt the cards, careful not to break his unwavering gaze on Light. One, two, three, then finally five cards lay at Light's feet. Light observed the cards with a blank face. Ryuzaaki's face was also unreadable as he picked up the scattered cards.

"Two," said Light, placing down two cards to be exchanged. Ryuzaaki promptly gathered them, dealing Light two new cards.

"Yagami-kun, would you ever cheat?"

Ryuzaaki asked the simple question as he placed three of his own cards on the couch, replacing them with three from the deck.

"What do you mean?" asked Light.

Ryuzaaki studied his new deck, fiddling with the cards. "Well, let's say that you only had two queens and two kings, then suddenly you had two queens and three kings." Ryuzaaki laid down his hand. "Full house."

Light's expression did not waver. "Cheating is low, rude, and designed by those who are greedy and gluttonous," he responded.

Ryuzaaki's eyes stared into Light's. "You didn't answer my question."

Light paused for a moment, fingering his deck. "Yes, I would cheat." He laid down his cards. "Straight. In spades."

"Why exactly would you cheat?" asked Ryuzaaki, collecting the cards and dealing them again.

Light returned Ryuzaaki's piercing stare. "To get something better, obviously." Both picked up their cards. "Unless you have something perfect, there's always room for improvement. Two," said Light, indicating the number of cards he wished to exchange.

"Do you love Misa-san?" asked Ryuzaaki, dealing the appropriate cards to Light.

Light took the cards. "As I told you before, it's all one-sided."

"So, she's not perfect," said Ryuzaaki, revealing his hand. "Royal flush."

Light gazed at Ryuzaaki's hand. "No, she's not," he responded, revealing his own cards. "Straight. In diamonds."

"So therefore," said Ryuzaaki, abandoning his cards and advancing towards Light, "you would be willing to cheat on her if there was an opportunity for something better."

Light breathed heavily as Ryuzaaki's body fell on top of his own. "Yes, I suppose I would."

Ryuzaaki smiled mischievously, his face only inches from Light's. "There's a reason for these handcuffs, you know."

Light found himself falling into tea-scented bliss. "Yes, I know," his lips whispered before they were handicapped by a second, sugary pair.
