"You stupid rat! When will you ever learn?" A lean boy of about sixteen, with flaming red hair screamed.

Yuki Sohma shook his head, causing strands of his beautiful, wispy, silver hair, almost threadlike, to catch the light. He calmly, but curtly answered his cousin.

"It was not I who chose to take the elevator Kyou, it was you. But then again I should have known better, you should never let a cat do anything you want done right, especially when that cat is you!"

"All right, that's it rat boy! Let's take this outside, you and me right now!" Kyou said, apoplectic. His fists were clenched so tightly, it looked as if he might burst.

Yuki gracefully turned his face to his enraged cousin. "In case you hadn't noticed, the elevator is stuck. It appears as if we are trapped." he stopped for a moment, obviously thinking. His face hardened, and he went on.

"Besides, if you hadn't upset Miss Honda this would have never happened!"

"How was I to know that an innocent remark like that would upset her?"

"Hasn't Shigure taught you any manners? You know Kyou, you tell Haru he's a real bastard when he turns black but you're just as bad. Only difference is you act like him all the time." Yuki spat loathingly at Kyou.

"The only reason I'm like this is because I have to beat you!"

"Why? So that you feel accepted? You are truly more obtuse than I thought, Kyou. Don't you understand? The cat will never be accepted into the Zodiac! I say this not out of spite, but out of understanding. The cat has never been included, not even since the beginning of time, and it never will be. Beating me in a fight won't change that. It's not so trivial a matter that years of history can be swept away through a single fighting bout. Yuki looked sad, almost apologetic.

"The reason I hate you is not because you're the cat, but because you can't see how lucky you are! You're a Sohma, it's true, but you can run away, leave! No one will come after you, to hunt you. No one will beat you afterwards, and leave you suffering for days." Yuki's face looked dark and serious, and Kyou could tell that he was being shown a naked, elemental part of Yuki, one that he had not shown many people, if anyone, before.

"That's why I hate you, because you can't see how lucky you are! You've always been blinded by the foolish desire to be accepted into the very same family I've tried my whole life to escape from!" he looked up, and Kyou could see that there were tears in his eyes. But, as always, his forlorn expression did not linger, and soon a fierce, passionate look took possession of his face. "If it's a fight you need though, if it makes you feel better, I'll give you one." he said resolutely.

"No," Kyou said softly, "let's just wait for the elevator to work again."

They waited together in silence, a new understanding haven crumbled the barrier that had for so long divided them.
