Chapter 1: The Welcome Intruder
The edge of the window scraped my knee softly as I stumbled into the apartment. It was silent, as all the places I have hidden in this town had been.
The place was clean, almost as if it wasn't really lived in at all, a simple distraction for me set up by whatever mind was behind this hell. Nearly unbreathable, the air was thin and stale. The first thing I noticed was a revolver on the counter, which I quickly picked up and continued around the room. A first aid kit, a broken television and radio, untouched books and… I stop in my tracks, staring at the door. It was chained and padlocked shut. The person who lived here must really have hated intruders…
I check to make sure the chains were secure. Of course they were. I groaned and turned towards the sound of the pouring rain again, ready to leave. Suddenly, the window slammed shut with a loud crack, causing me to yelp. In a panic, I drop the gun and sprint to the now closed window and try with everything in me to open it. Something stirs in the next room and I try to break the glass with my fist.
"FUCK." I'm holding my now-pained hand close to me as I hear the door down the hall quietly creak open. I hadn't checked there…
The revolver!
I race to where the gun lay on the ground, in front of the hallway and scoop it up. Aiming it without thinking, I point it at the man that had come out of the bedroom.
"W-what the hell?" I was thrown off when he spoke, his eyes wide and hands immediately at either side of his head, "How did you get in here?" He looks a bit… like me and it's strange, but this fills me with relief, causing me to lower the gun and him to drop his hands.
"You scared me, man."
"You're in… my apartment."
I look around, "Didn't think anyone lived here." He's still at the end of the hall and I'm at the entrance and neither of us are moving. "This place feels dead." I look to the window. "It stopped raining…"
"How did you get in?" He repeats, a slight difference of strain in his voice tells me something's wrong.
"The window. But… The damn thing won't open now."
"It… Doesn't open from the inside. How did you get up here?"
I look at him funny as he passes by me and goes to the window, trying and failing to open it.
"I climbed the fire escape ladder…" He's rather calm for just having had someone break into his home… but in this horrible, monster filled place, I figured everyone must have to be mad.
"There's no ladder."
"What?"
"Frank's not that great of a landlord. We have stairs out in the hallway that lead to the entrance. Not ladders."
"I… I came here on a ladder." I tell him with a bit more force than I meant to.
He just sighs and shakes his head, giving up on the window and turning back to me. "Show me."
