Bloodlust

Summary: When the Doctor is bitten by a vampire, Martha is faced with a choice: stay, and be bitten too, or leave the Doctor to die. TenMartha

A/N This was inspired by MissHauntedMoonlight's It's Just A Scratch, which is one of the best vampire stories I have ever read. Seriously, go read. If you like vampires, you will love this.

She heard his approach. She sat, chin resting on her knees, arms around her legs, staring into the fire. She knew he hated the light, but he said nothing. He never had. The bloodlust coursing through him since the bite was strong, but he was still fighting it. He could not fight for much longer, however, and this visit would decide Martha's future. If she accepted the bite, she would stay. If not, he would take her home and leave her there. Forever. He had made that part quite clear- he would stop the TARDIS reaching her so he could never get her. Every other period of Earth history was already sealed off. All that remained was for her to make her choice. He stood there, watching her silently as he leant against the doorframe. After a few moments, he spoke in his new, ethereal and hauntingly sexy voice.

"I can't fight much longer. I need your decision now." She did not move. "Will you stay?" There was a pleading note to the voice. He had explained it earlier: if he could not bite her, he could not bite anyone. She assumed that meant he would starve. Was it really such a terrible thing, to cause a vampire's death? Could he die? Apparently the stake myth did not apply to the species which had bitten him- but nothing was immortal. Was it? Was he even alive? She stood and turned to face him.

"The Earth is off-limits?"

"Of course. Whether you stay or go, your time frame will be sealed too." She stepped over to him. His eyes, blood-red and intense, looked into hers. There was a moment of silence before she spoke.

"I'm staying." He looked surprised. "You've saved my life far too many times for me to leave now. So I'm not going to." He reached up to touch her cheek.

"You're sure?" She nodded.

"Yes." He kissed her lightly, fangs brushing against her lips. He reached out a hand, which she took, and they walked into the console room together. He let go of her hand, making the final arrangements necessary for his full transformation. He tugged the viewscreen around, then paused.

"This is your last chance. If I finish the seal, it'll become permanent." Martha nodded.

"I know. I told you- I'm not going." His expression was unreadable as he turned back to the viewscreen.

"Done." He walked over to her.

"Go on then."

The fangs nicked her dark skin gently, almost reverently. He was toying with her. She looked up.

"Are you going to do this or what?" His red eyes met hers and he chuckled in that haunted tone that had developed, along with everything else.

"Of course." He purred, curling his tongue around a fang as he brushed a strand of hair to the side, smiling. She took her last breath, which echoed amidst the silence of the room.

And the TARDIS shuddered as the Doctor finally surrendered to the bloodlust.
