I was outside, just came back from hunting with my sister, Kate. I walked into the house, and wiped my hands sloppily on my bright white shirt. Oh well. I didn't like it much anyways. I settled on the couch beside Carmen and picked out a magazine from the table beside me.
Carmen turned around to face me.
"How was hunting?" Carmen asked in her thick accent.
"Good. I'm not hungry anymore." I said.
She nods, and she stares out the window and I read in silence. Carmen seems to be waiting for something. She seems troubled and keeps glancing at me.
I was just beginning to wonder what Carmen was worrying about when Kate walked in.
"Hey, Tanya?" she said hesitantly, lingering at the doorframe, not entering the room. She held a letter in an opened envelope.
"What?" I said, looking up from my magazine.
She sat down next to me and exchanged a tense look with Carmen. I took out the letter curiously. It was addressed to all of us. Kate, Irina, Carmen, Eleazer, and myself, in a handwriting I recognized well. Wondering what on earth this could be about, I opened the letter, Carmen looking the other way and Kate staring at her hands but sneaking glances at me.
My eyes widened as I read the letter.
It was a wedding invitation. To Edwards wedding. I swallowed. I felt something in me crushing, something in me sinking. I felt like, if my heart were, beating, it would freeze and sink slowly into my stomach. All the hope and joy I ever had was being sucked out of me as if by a vacuum cleaner. I was frozen. Kate glanced at me as I quickly handed Carmen the invitation, even though I had a feeling that she already knew what it was about. Carmen looked at it without emotion.
"Who is Bella Swan?" asked Carmen.
"She's a human girl who attended school with the Cullen family. But they might have to turn her into a vampire too, since she knows too much," said Eleazer, who just walked in, looking quite calm.
"How do you know?" I said quickly, goggling at him.
"I just got off the phone with Edward," Eleazer explained, staring at me.
"Oh. Right," I said, feeling embarrassed.
"I can't wait to meet her," I finally said, recovering myself.
"We're going?" Carmen said, looking slightly surprised.
"Of course. We have to support Edward and the rest of the Cullens," I said, turning back to my professional self. "And..." I swallowed. "Bella, too."
Carmen beamed.
Kate squeezed my shoulders. "Great."
Kate and Carmen both knew how I feel about Edward, ever since our clan first met his. I was immediately smitten with him, but Edward…
"Edward…" I said, looking into his golden eyes, reaching for his face.
He looked at me sadly, and gently pulled my hands away.
"No, Tanya. I can't," he said, and he took off. I opened my eyes again, and he was gone. Like a dream. I finally found the boy I was in love with, and I was immediately rejected. Why? I thought he returned my feelings, but he obviously didn't. I know that he will never want me that way, but I will always love him.
