Fresh Start- Agents of Shield Fan Fiction
Just sort of a short thing I wrote up,
I included some characters that are going to be appearing in AoS later and this an Au, mostly, but following I think some of the emotions Skye will go through with her new powers, and the things that might be happening on the show.
Enjoy! It's a one-shot, btw.
A Fresh Start
Skye stood at the edge of the road, the rain soaking through her polyester jacket and down into her skin. She walked slowly along the edge of the road her hands rocking her shoulders to try and keep warm. Skye sees a light pierce through the darkness, and she sticks her hand out to see if the truck going by will notice her.
The car pulls over to the side, the first out of the forty eight cars this evening that had passed by her. The guy in the driver's side pulls down his window. "Need a ride!" he shouts through the loud sound of the rain. "It's kind of rainy out!" His southern accent echoes.
Skye rolls back her shoulders. "That'd be great!" She answers.
Skye walks over to the vehicle, her jeans, jacket and shirt all soaked to the bottom. She felt bad as she took a seat in this guy's clean dry truck, but the heat blasting her face as she opened the guys' door felt nice and relaxing. "Where you off to?" He asks Skye, his car still pulled over onto the side of the road.
"You can just drop me off in whatever town you're heading to." Skye replies with ease. The man smiles, one of his front teeth missing.
"Well I live a few miles just outside of Portland but I pass through it on the way, I can drop you off at a hostel if you want?"
The man's voice seemed calming and genuine, which made Skye feel more at ease.
"That'd be very helpful, thanks a tone." Skye answers with a smile.
The man starts up his car, his eyes focusing on the road like he was getting over a hangover. "So tell me your name, I'm Derek." The driver says to start a conversation.
The question was simple, easy and even a two year old could have answered it. But Skye, she didn't know what to say. She had too many names, and none of them felt particular to go by here.
She could use Mary, like when she was a child at the orphanage. That was the simpler one, the one that brought back childhood memories.
Or she could use the name she chose, the one that she viewed as her true name. Skye; that was the name she preferred and would love to always be called. But she couldn't risk it, if this man somehow was ever asked about her, the name Skye would lead her right back to her multiple enemies.
Then there was her birth name, the one her birth father and mother had chosen. Daisy. Simple and plain, and kind of old fashioned. Skye hated it, but yet somewhere deep inside it kind of made her feel at peace. But whenever she heard her father speak the name, whenever he said it. She wanted to cry and punch and do so much more.
And then there was her alias. The name in her file on the index, Quake.
"My names Hailey." She answers. Using a general but not to general name. It was better than one of her four other known names, maybe she could even grow to like it.
"Hailey, than." The driver Derek says over, using his accent. "Well nice to meet you Hailey." He looks over at her from the steering wheel. At first Skye thought he was checking her out, but he goes to turn up the heat. "Must be cold standing out in the rain so long." Derek lets out a yawn. Skye guess he was close to forty. "Well than again, rains better than the crazy earthquakes happening across America as of late. You hear there was one up in Los Angeles just last week."
Skye nods, not really wanting to go over this conversation. Really anything but this.
Derek looks down at Skye's feet. "You don't have a backpack?" he notices. "Guess you're not crossing America by foot." He jokes causally.
Skye smiles, but even she knows it's a lame attempt.
The driver Derek comes to a stop sign. "Look I don't want to make this uncomfortable." He starts off. "But I know you have a gun under that jacket of yours." Skye tightens in her seat, her whole body going stiff. "Now I don't want to hurt you, and I hope you don't want to hurt me. But just so we're clear I have a shotgun underneath my seat, and I can pull it out at a moment's notice."
Skye knows that if this man was dangerous she could take him out; she could take him out easily. But something told her that this man was honest, and that he wasn't going to hurt her. "So are you in trouble with the law, an abusive boyfriend." Skye stiffens when he says abusive boyfriend, memories of Ward coming back. "Ah so it was an abusive boyfriend." Derek guesses from Skye's body language.
"Something like that." Skye reminisces.
Skye pictures Ward, facing her after the time he'd shot her. Ward had gone to a place of violent obsession with her, and Skye never got a chance to stick around for the outcome. That had actually been the only time Skye was thankful for her gift… no not thankful, appreciate was the better word, but even than she couldn't come to even like her power.
Seeking help with her father brought nothing but pain and more questions than answers, and Reader, why Reader had been worse than her father. When he'd first showed up at the base, and Mack just handed her over like that, and Hunter, Simmons and Fitz just watched. Skye knew they'd never accept her after that, and even though Reader brought her to people just like her, she didn't appreciate his methods.
Coulson had tried to help her, bringing in May's exe husband Dr. Andrew Garner, but sometimes Skye didn't know if his methods were cruel or necessary. Maybe a bit of both.
Skye knew Coulson had tried to help her. Even after Reader had kidnapped her, even after Coulson came to rescue her, Skye just couldn't go back. Not when she could hurt them, not when her power brought so much pain. Skye was still getting over how many people she'd hurt, maybe even killed.
"Want to talk about it?" Derek asks Skye. But Skye shook her head, knowing it'd be impossible to tell the full story. "Sometimes talking helps." Derek reminds Skye.
Skye bites the edge of her lip, looking at a sign they pass that says it's about another 72 miles or so to Portland. Skye sighs.
"You see my dad… well he's my foster dad I guess you could say." Skye tells Derek, thinking a foster dad was a good way to describe Coulson. "And he really loves me, even after I'd changed." Skye left it up to Derek's imagination on how she changed. His thoughts probably guessing drugs. "You see I changed, and he tried to support me, but he just didn't understand what I was going though. I knew I had to leave, but…" Skye sighs. "I didn't leave soon enough, and because of that people got hurt. My friends got hurt because I'd changed." Skye fixes her jacket, now drying in the heat of the car. "My friend he betrayed me in a way, and because of that I ended up with some bad people."
Derek flexes his eyebrows, probably making assumptions about things. He was way off, Skye knew.
"My foster dad tried to save me from these bad people, but… once I saw him again I knew that no matter what he did he couldn't help me… or understand what was happening to me. So I found my real dad." Skye explains to Derek. "He did understand, but his temper made things difficult and I just couldn't handle being around him." Skye grips her arm, feeling a bruise. "So I ran from both him and my foster dad. Except where I sought refuge, an old boyfriend of mine found me, and he wasn't exactly considerate." Skye remembers the way that Ward touched her, trying to take her for himself. The 4.5 earthquake that hit Los Angeles that day had been deserved.
"Anyway I ran from that, only to find…." Skye didn't know how to explain Hydra. "An old friend of my boyfriend needed me, and would stop at nothing to get me." Skye hugs her body. "I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm running, but every time I run someone always catches up to me and sometimes I just can't keep up."
Derek keeps driving, the rain getting lighter as they drive further up the road. Skye looks at the clock, 3am. "Uh some story Hailey. And I thought I was kind of messed up." Derek scratches his head. "I can see why you need the gun."
"I'm sorry; I shouldn't have burdened you with that. You can drop me off at the next town if you want." Skye offers.
"This old friend of your boyfriend, did you get away from him." The driver asks. Skye nods. "Did he threaten to kill you?" Skye bites her lip not responding. "Girl I'm sorry but we need to go to the police."
"We can't do that." Skye replies. "If we did that, I'm afraid things would grow worse than they already are. My boyfriend has access to police files, along with his friend, and both my fathers would as well, not to mention the group of bad people my friend sold me out to. Going to the police might as well be calling all them and offering me to them." Skye sighs.
"Now if that were to happen, who would be that one person you'd want to show up first. Who would be the person you ran to?"
Shield, Skye knew the answer to that.
"My foster dad Coulson." Skye answers. "But I couldn't do that, I couldn't go back. I hurt my sister Jemma." Skye explains, putting Simmons as a sister to make the story simpler to tell. "I didn't mean to but the way everyone looked at me after, they saw me different they weren't looking at Sk—Hailey anymore, they were looking at someone else."
"So take simple steps and apologize." Derek gives advice on.
"It's not that simple I'm afraid. I have apologized on multiple occasions, but the incident itself was an accident, and it's not something you can just forgive." Skye explained. "Even if I did go back and apologize I might hurt her again, or any one of my family members. I could hurt any of them."
"So fix your problem." Derek offers. "I mean it shouldn't be too hard, and even if you were to hurt them, they'll forgive you if they love you."
Skye sighs, her clothes beginning to dry under the heat. "But I will hurt them, what I can do—what I've done will just bring more pain." Skye explains. "I just want to find somewhere to belong." Skye admits out loud. She couldn't believe she actually admitted that.
Derek pulls up at a stoplight. "Maybe what you need is a fresh start. Somewhere you can get your crap together, and when you're ready go back home to your foster Dad." Derek suggests.
"A fresh start?" The words felt weird on her tongue. She could try, but in the end wouldn't someone find her, someone always found her in the end. But she could try, maybe she could even last a few months. She could enter a college or something under an alias, make up some story about nice normal parents, maybe she'd even have two younger siblings, Skye had always wanted a cute baby brother.
She could be from somewhere like Canada, and have gone to a public school and actually graduated, she could have had some lame job at Tim Horton's for most of her teenage life, just to save up money for college. She'd have a very kind mother, who did her best to support her in whatever way she could, maybe even a childhood friend who was always there for her.
Maybe at this college she could find a boyfriend who was kind, and maybe had a few faults, but wouldn't be a complete pyscho like Ward, or lie and do the wrong thing like Miles.
Maybe Skye could live a normal life, be free— even if it was only for a few months.
Derek slams on the breaks, to stop from veering into a person. "What the?!" As the car turns sideways, on the verge of rolling over, but it stops, skid marks visible in the rain.
Skye blinks, focusing on the person in the back window. Her fresh start was gone, her idea for a new start down the drain.
"Who does this person think he is, standing out in the middle of the road?!" Derek mutters unbuckling his seat belt. Skye does the same getting out of car. "Hey Hailey, stay in the car, I'll check it out…" But the door was closed and Skye was already on her way. Lights from the car were the only source of light as Skye got, but she could still see the man's face.
It was Reader; or Gorden as was his real name. With him was Lincoln. "Skye, we haven't seen each other in a while." He greets. Skye holds her arms scared of what's to come.
She was so stupid to think she could get away. Not with all the inhumans Gorden had at his disposal, and Lincoln, she had trusted him and that had stabbed her in the back. Completely in the back. At least he was better than Ward, Skye trusted every other person on this earth, more than Ward.
Derek comes out with his shot gun. "I don't know who you people are, but you better step back."
Reader looks at Lincoln, and he quickly splashes the rain in Derek's direction. If only it hadn't been raining. "Skye, you have to come with us, it's for the best." Reader says. "This poor man isn't one of us, and you know how things work out for them."
Skye steps forward. She already missed Coulson, and her team.
But at least maybe with Reader, she wouldn't hurt anyone. And even if she did they'd understand. Unlike her team had.
Skye still remembers the day that Gorden had first shown up at the base. He'd brought four others with him, and without Coulson or May there at the time.
They had everyone at gunpoint, and were asking for her. Of course Skye was going to hand herself over, but before she'd even got the chance, Mack had grabbed Skye from behind and thrown her at them saying 'take her.' Simmons and Fitz just watched. It had only been a few days ago, that Skye had accidentally crushed Simmons left arm with her power, causing the roof to collapse. No one had said anything as Gorden took her.
Coulson and the team came to save her a week later, having found her. But not until after Gorden and the others had made her realize that she'd never fit in with them, not ever.
Skye looks at Lincoln, she did like Lincoln, he'd been nice to her, had helped start her training, and even though he had a little sense of what she was going through, he'd never be able to understand. Not ever.
"Skye why don't you come home with us." Reader/Gorden offers, letting his hand out. Skye steps forward.
"Hailey, these one of the guys chasing you." Derek yells from the ground. "Don't go with them." He tries to get up, but Lincoln uses his ability, to wrap the water around Derek's feet like shackles. "You need a fresh start, don't be forced to go back."
Lincoln looks nervously around the area. "Skye we need to go, Hydra's on the move and they'll be after us."
"Hydra?" Derek repeats. "Skye?" He looks up at the girl he thought was Hailey.
"I'm sorry." Skye mutters to him. "But thank you for the ride, but I guess this is my stop now." Skye walks over to the eyeless man, and looks back sadly at Derrek. "Thank you for listening, but unfortunately a fresh start is impossible."
Skye leaves with the two men, knowing that she'd never truly have a home.
