Soul Note By Ellie Atfield-Cutts

Vibrant unspoiled water, inviting me into its aquatic depths. Cliffs with fragrant plants, gripping their faces for dear life. Warm sand hugging my toes, an old worn jetty that had been the landing place of the boat that brought me here, to this paradise. A world of joy and piece away from the noise and my bore of a life in Tokyo, Japan. At least that's what I hoped for.

"Haru! Haru can you please recite page 127 chapter 6 paragraph 5?" I sigh. Back to reality. I stand and turn the page in my book to page 127.

"Yes Sensei ….Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light." I said with a drone like expression not bothering to hide my boredom

"Thank you Haru, perfect pronunciation as usual, but what else should I expect from our top student!" I sit. I turn my gaze to outside the window by my desk, and I catch a glimpse of two small objects falling to the ground on the other side of the school courtyard. Where could they have come from? Did someone drop them out of the windows? I had no clue what they were but they remained in my head for the rest of class.

On my way out of school I unconsciously wondered to where I saw the objects fell, to find a glowing white notebook and feather quill I, picked them up and stuffed them in my old worn fake leather satchel, planning to hand them in to the school the next day.

Crammed in between a snoring old lady and a man with elfish features who seemed to be simply staring at his hands, which were placed in his lap, I decided to have a look at the notebook I'd picked up earlier to see if there was a name in it. Its cover had an odd styled black writing showing the title" Soul Book ". The leather binding was soft and well worn, flicking through the pages I was surprised to find the notebook was completely empty except for two strange names: Gealous and Rem. I then noticed a pair of deep brown eyes rigid with curiosity and warning. Watching me. The eyes of the man with elfish features, next to me. Even as I looked him in the eye, he didn't look away, he didn't cower. He simply looked right at me with a challenging gaze.

BING BONG BING!

Saved by the bell.

"Next stop Harajuku" Mumbled the inarticulate voice booming through the speakers above my head. I get up and move towards the train door just before the vehicle lurched to a halt, clutching the Soul Book to my chest, somehow finding its presence reassuring after the stare down with the elf man. Walking out of the station, my eyes flickered towards the newspaper stand.

"Kira's Killer found! Has Kira's killer been revealed?!"

Kira.

It had been only a year since the international reign of the serial killer Kira had been terminated with the arrest and mysterious murder of 21 year-old university student and childhood friend Light Yagami. Kira was thought to some people as the keeper of justice, he would kill anyone who he thought deserved to die: those on death row, people who had been proclaimed guilty but never prosecuted anyone who had committed a serious crime. One of those who had been judged by this so called "god" Kira was my older brother Mello, who had assisted in the investigation to arrest Kira after his mentor "L" had been slaughtered by Kira. Mello and I had never been close but he was still family, the only family I'd ever had. No one knows who our parents had been, whether they died or whether they are still alive, only that they had named us Mello and Haru.

Light Yagami had been my best friend in kindergarten although we'd slowly grown apart over time. I have never been quite able to understand how Light could have been Kira. How could a university student kill so many people without being in the same city or even the same country? How could he kill people by method of heart attack? How could he even give them heart attacks?

These thoughts badgered my mind until I had finally reached my apartment I chucked my bag and the Soul Note on the couch shuffled to my bedroom threw myself on my bed and fell asleep.

The next morning I woke up to the torturous sound of my dying doorbell, I opened the door to find the man of elfish features staring at me with radiant eyes filled with questions and joy. His eyes were large and slanted his brown eyes were now a strange yellow with a cat eye pupils. He had beautiful caramel skin and high cheekbones that could slice through steal. He had shaped red lips the bottom lip full and the upper lip soft. He had thick black hair that fell over his eyes framing and framing his face.

"Haru owner of the Soul Note, I have finally found you!"
