"Dear diary, I can't take it anymore," Annabeth wrote. "I'll be dead by tomorrow.
No one would care. Luke definitely wouldn't. If her dad noticed (which was highly unlikely) he might even be happy. As for Thalia...well, it was all her fault for suggesting Annabeth ask Luke out anyway.
Their relationship had been great at first, and then Luke had started hanging out with a group of rebel kids whose main ambition was to skateboard or play video games all day. That group had decided that Annabeth wasn't allowed to date Luke anymore because she "ruined the vibe" as they put it.
So Luke broke up with Annabeth. Poor, heartbroken Annabeth had no idea what to do. She was depressed and lonely. She began to feel that nobody would miss her if-no, when she died.
Annabeth decided she was going to have some fun on her last day. Usually she would stay in her bedroom all day with the blinds closed and mope around, but today she was going to go to the ice cream store and grab a treat. Not the ice cream store across town that was super expensive and popular, but the one down the road that nobody ever went to. It was isolated, but it was better than nothing.
She threw on a black hoodie over her black shirt and jeans. Ever since the breakup, she had resorted to wearing dark colored, two-sizes-too-big t-shirts and skinny jeans every day. It sort of had become her uniform over the past few weeks.
After making sure her eyes weren't puffy or red, she walked outside and blinked. It was brighter than what she was used to. Annabeth strolled casually to the ice cream shop, looking at the ground. She didn't make eye contact with anyone, not even the man she was ordering from at the counter.
"I'll have a small chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, please." If there was one thing Annabeth loved, it was chocolate ice cream. Chocolate ice cream could never break up with her. Chocolate ice cream would never let her down. She could drown her sorrows in chocolate ice cream and it would be fine. So that's what she ordered.
She walked back out into the sunlight, holding her cone. It was all going well until a body crashed into her. Her chocolate ice cream splattered to the ground. Annabeth crossed her arms until she heard a voice apologizing to her.
"I'm so sorry! Will you let me buy you another ice cream to make up for it?" Annabeth looked into to the eyes of the voice's owner-and melted. He had raven black tousled hair and his eyes were the glory of his face. They were a beautiful sea green, and they sparkled in the sunlight.
"Okay," she found herself replying. Then she was smiling! She hadn't smiled since Luke and her were together. Annabeth blushed, which made the boy smile too. They walked into the shop together and sat at a table.
"I'll go get us some ice creams," the boy said. "You stay here. By the way, I'm Percy. Percy Jackson."
Annabeth tried to tell him her name, but she was too flustered. She waited until he came back with the ice cream to talk. He had brought her a chocolate with sprinkles and for himself some sort of blue ice cream with blueberries on it.
"I'm Annabeth," she started. "How did you know that I like chocolate with sprinkles?" She gestured to her cone.
"If I see someone I like, I'm going to pay attention to what sort of things they like. And I figured you liked chocolate with sprinkles. So I got that." Percy smiled an adorable smile, and Annabeth hated herself for thinking like that.
"So...you like me?" Annabeth was too afraid to even hope that it was true.
"Yes," Percy replied. "Do you want to meet back here tomorrow? I have to babysit my sister soon."
Annabeth contemplated her choices. She could disappear and not take this chance to meet a great guy, or she could meet him the next day and start something crazy but amazing.
She thought before answering. "Yes," she answered. "I'll be here. Tomorrow."
