Patronus

Prologue:

If not for the horrendous screams and thuds heard from the outside one would have thought it to be a completely normal night for the early summer. Well, save for the cold, but this did not interest the boy standing in front of one well-known mirror.

It's edges and the edges of its frame had slightly darkened, probably due to the years spent in this room together will all those things that were once lost but could be found in here.

To be honest it had been a surprise finding it in here when it was just here he spent a lot of his time in here last year, contemplating plans of death and disaster. When he first saw it stuffed under some old clothes hanging out of a school trunk one of the first years might have lost, he didn't think any of it. At least not until another person remembered its function due to the words written on its frame.

And it was exactly this function was, which made the boy restless right now.

Having a good look at the mirror he didn't see his usual reflection but… an animal. Or rather two. And lions at that which were only portrayed by white swirling webs in the air.

If he hadn't known he wouldn't have paid any attention to their closeness or to the fact that the male lion slightly nipped on the ear of the female one and deserved himself a nudge in the ribs. Motion was brought into his mane and with a swirl the picture changed into that of a boy and a girl, this time solid and completely visible to one's eyes.

They stood just as close as the animals before and just when the girl stood on her toes and put a longing kiss on his lips the boy standing before the mirror of erised put a hand on his left forearm and pushed.

The pain didn't come.

Nor did the image of one dark figure and the feeling of another's thoughts creeping into your consciousness.

And this was the moment that he made his decision.

Having one last look at the mirror the boy put a smile on his face and rolled up his sleeves to leave the room with a look of determination on his face.
