Katherine had always been a selfish girl. She vaguely remembered once, when she was human, pushing her cousin into the lake because she had a nicer dress than her. The memory made her smile, if only for a second. Every movement she made hurt dreadfully now. She was so frightfully weak… she craved blood; rich red and satisfying to her needs. But she was without it, and had been for a long time.

She lay down carefully on the makeshift bed she had made of the blankets Elena Gilbert had brought her… how long ago was it? She wasn't sure- it felt like a very long time. Elena was the last person- human or otherwise- she had had contact with since the Salvatore brothers had locked her in the tomb. All she had down underground was a tiny bottle that had once been full of blood, but was now well on its way to drained, with only a few drops left, and of course she had her memories.

Memories that haunted her every single second of every single day. Some days, visions of Stefan- not this new Stefan, the monster she had foolishly created- and herself when they had first met drifted into her mind. Those memories were nice; she always welcomed them were open arms, no matter how much her heart ached afterwards at the reminder of everything she had lost.

But some nights, when she was feeling especially cold and alone, she remembered how her mother used to comfort her when she was a child. In Bulgaria, the winters were always dreadful. Katherine's mother would wait until everybody else was in bed, then tiptoe into little Katerina's room. There she would sit with her daughter in her arms, and would sing to drown out the howling wind and heavy rain banging on the tin roof. Katherine missed that.

In more recent nights however, Katherine had spent a lot of time thinking about Damon. She had treated him dreadfully, and she regretted that. But during their time spent together in 1864, Katherine had always looked to Damon Salvatore as a brotherly figure in her life. He was protective and caring, always putting her best interests first. She should have known, when she saw how he treated other women, that he felt differently about her. But she was so distracted by her love for Stefan, she didn't have enough headspace to think about poor Damon too.

Elena seemed to have kept both of the Salvatore brothers happy. Katherine hated her for that; a silly human being able to do something which she never had. Jealously engulfed Katherine every time she thought of Elena.

Not only did Elena Gilbert- a girl whom should, by all rights, be hunted like Katherine once was- have Damon under her spell, she also had Stefan. Stefan, the one person- other than her all but forgotten daughter and kindly mother- who she had always cared deeply for. It seemed vastly unfair that Katherine should be alone, whilst the irritating human girl should have dozens of people who loved her and hung on her every word.

The truth was, all Katherine wanted was to be adored. That wasn't too much to ask for, was it? All the nasty, horrible, evil things she had done in her life, had all been because she was miserable.

She knew it wasn't a good excuse but… it was all true. And no matter what she led people to believe, underneath the harsh exterior, she was just a young girl, still broken and bitter over the loss of her daughter and death of her family.

All she wanted was to be loved.
