I Know, a Pokémon Fanfiction
May refused to believe the news that rocked her world. Oneshot.
"No, no! It's not true!" She dropped to the ground, crying. "He would never leave me!"
Delia Ketchum wiped her own tears away. "He wanted to avenge his father... the Alakazam destroyed his mind, then his soul." She began to cry harder.
"Oh, Ash, why?"
In a perfect world

She felt her heart flutter when she first met him, but her anger soon overcame that. However, she felt herself gradually warm to him, laughing and smiling along.

He quickly became her closest friend, although she knew he didn't feel the same way - Pikachu took that place - but he counted her among his best friends. They were inseparable, right until she decided to travel through Johto, and Ash through Sinnoh.

And then, it happened. Two weeks into her Johto journey, she awoke, with her soul on fire. Her dream had been about Ash... no need to go further.
By dawn, turning in today

Little did she know, Ash had the same dream. They spent so long, dancing around each other. When she visited Ash, Brock and Dawn for the Wallace Cup, she was insanely jealous of Dawn, because of the care Ash had for her. Just before she left, though, Ash dragged her away to talk.
I was so afraid

"I wanted to ask you something."
"Shoot."
"May, I really like you. I mean, a whole lot. And I feel pretty dumb telling you this now. But, will you go out with me?"
He'd held his breath, expecting her to laugh and walk away. Instead, he was shocked when he felt her lips against his.
The kiss has lasted for only a few seconds, but it was enough. When they broke apart, May looked into Ash's eyes.
"Yes."
There's a perfect world
Shining in your eyes

"I love you, May Maple."
"I love you too, Ash Ketchum."

They'd agreed to keep their relationship hidden for the time being, until Ash came back from Sinnoh to Kanto, intending to challenge the Gyms again.

But, it seems Arceus mocked their love. Ash, having been back in Kanto for no less than a week, became fired up when Delia told him and May about how Ash's father had died. He snuck out at night, intending to find that murderous Alakazam and teach it a good lesson. He'd even left a note for May:
"May Maple,
I love you now, and for evermore.
I've gone to find that Alakazam that Mum told us about. Be back in the next few days.
Forever and a day,
Ash."
I know love will find a way...
And here they were, May and Delia at the hospital. Pikachu, badly injured, had been rushed to surgery, even as he protected the body of his master. Ash's other Pokémon had been given into the care of May and his mother.
May crouched on the floor, huddling into herself, when she felt warmth next to her.
Blaziken, having escaped her Pokéball, came and wrapped an arm around May's shoulders. Sceptile, making his way out of his, came and did the same. Suddenly, May was swamped by Pokémon, Ash's and her own, all seeking the comfort of each other.
May looked to the roof of the hospital, all the Pokémon looking up with her.
"Ash, I know you can hear me. I'm going to live enough for the two of us, because that's the duty of those who are left behind." She smiled though her tears.
"Thank you, Ash."
