"Once upon another time, our story had only begun..
You chose to turn the page, and I made choices too..
Once upon that other time, we did what we thought must be done,
And now we have no choice, we do what we must do..."
~ 'Once Upon Another Time' Song in Andrew Loyd Webber's Love Never Dies
Chapter 1- It's Only the Beginning
..And what she found was the remains of a single red rose, that had long before wilted. The young woman, who was once an innocent child, was now an empty shell, for now her true love was nevermore…
A single tear fell down the young soprano's delicate features, her deep auburn eyes glistening with moisture. Her finger traced the now dried, long forgotten rose that once resembled a loved one—now who was lost.
Christine placed the rose's remains on her old dresser, looking around at the charred walls. Sadly, the entire theater had been badly damaged form the fire which took place on the night of Don Juan Triumphant several weeks before. Gingerly taking each step, she walked out of her old dressing room and into the hall way. She no longer felt that particular feeling of mystery and magic that was felt before in the Paris Opera House. Now, it was replaced with a saddening emptiness. Christine soon arrives at the used to be grand entrance of the Opera House, the magnificent marble floors covered with a blanket of ashes. Getting out through a secret exit, she quickly hurried back to the DeChagney's large home.
Hearing light steps, Raul stood up, walking out of his father's office. As Christine passed him, not bothering to notice, Raoul saw a distinct look of sorrow in her eyes. He walked up behind her.
"Little Lotte? What is the matter? You seem so…forlorn..." She stops, to turn towards him. "Raoul, ever since we left the opera house weeks before today, I just haven't felt the same..." Raoul shook his head lightly, grinning playfully. "Christine, have no worries. I am certain that we can find another opera house for-"Christine turned around once again, biting her lip. "No Raoul, I meant the Phantom's lair…I feel as if I have made the wrong choice…"
Raoul shook his head, his playful grin now gone. "You mean when you left that horrid monster who you call your 'Angel of Music'? You did the right thing. Who knows what may have happened if you were to stay with that wretched beast!"
Christine's expression was of a look of shock and hurt. "Monster? Beast? Raoul, he was nothing of the sort..!" "He murdered, kidnapped you, and threatened to kill me if you didn't marry him! He belongs in Hell, for he is the devil himself!"
Out of sudden impulse, Christine raised her hand, turning around, and slapping the Victome across his face..
As soon as she had realized what she had just done, she instantly walked closer, a hand to her mouth… "Oh…Raoul I apologize…I didn't mean to..." Raoul looked to the side, then back at Christine, a hurt expression on his face.. "I-I know…" "Raoul, I am so sorry..."
"No, no, it's fine," He replied, forcing a smile. "Really…" He walked back into his father's office, closing the door behind him. Christine, who had stood there for several moments afterword, sighed deeply. Everything was going all wrong…First her decision, then, then this…
