Chapter 1: After the Moon
Renesmee
~X~
I remember everything. Some parts, of course, are sort of a blur, but nonetheless the memory is as clear as day: Jacob carrying me on his back, my mom standing against the Volturi, my aunt and uncle locked in a passionate embrace, the other that was just like me…everything. I remember Jacob carrying me home, careful that I didn't fall off his back. His loping gait was as smooth as water, as soft as a cloud. I almost wanted to stay on his back forever.
When we returned home, Jacob changed. He returned to his human form and wrapped me tightly in his arms, encasing me in his warmth.
"I'm so glad you're safe…I couldn't lose you," he whispered softly into my hair. I didn't respond. It felt good to be in his arms. He was warm, and soft, and comforting. My mother and father were hard like stone and cold, like ice over a river. The river couldn't flow. I remember my father saying my mother was once like Jacob, as was he, but they changed. He never explained how.
Jacob put me down in my bed. He too looked exhausted. Today had been trying for all of us. Jacob promised to stay with me until I was asleep, rubbing my back and soothing me. I was out before my parents returned home.
~Ten Years Later~
My internal radar was on fire. He's somewhere around here…
A smile played across my lips as my fingers lightly brushed the leaves on either side of me. The path ahead was clear. I could see him now. He was lurking, obviously on the hunt. He would have no idea I was approaching…
He turned. His ears perked forward, sensing something moving in the woods. Nothing. Hmm, he thought, strange… he turned back into the wind. The smell of deer wafted towards him from all directions. There must have been a herd in the woods. He licked his lips and crouched low, about to go on the chase.
"RAH!" I sprung out from the trees and landed on top of him, toppling him to the ground. He morphed, changing back into his human form in the blink of an eye. He wrapped me in his arms as the impact made us roll down the hill. We landed in a flock of birds, laughing hysterically. "Ha ha, surprised you!"
He laughed throatily, "Yes you did, but now my lunch is gone." He pouted, patting his rumbling stomach.
"Oh, that's easy," I smiled, "You're not forced to eat one single food. Let's go home and make some."
"But that's just no fun…"
I laughed, rolling onto my back. Jacob laughed with me, rolling over so we were both looking at the sky. The clouds rolled across the endless blue, forming to the shapes of our minds. "Look a horse!" I pointed upwards. Jacob smiled, looked at me, and kissed me.
Something shifted. My eyes sprang open and I leapt to my feet, using my senses to feel what was there. A spy…
"UGH! Dad!" He popped out of the trees, smiling at me and Jacob. My mom appeared behind him, holding his hand.
"Romantic moment ruined by the parental authorities," Jacob muttered angrily, and I couldn't help but snicker.
"Hello, Jacob," my father said, "Before you take my daughter away from me, Esme wanted to invite you back to the house for lunch." My mother nodded, silently laughing. They disappeared, my father's laugh fading.
"I at least hope it's turkey sandwiches," Jacob said, taking my hand and leading me back to the house.
