"Was there ever anything between us?"

Rarely are you asked a question that not only has so many answers, so many possibilities, but leaves you speechless, stuck for an answer. Had there been anything between you and him? It depends on the meaning of 'anything'. You remember the nights you spent in his bed, in his arms... but he never once told you he loved you. You believed he did but since he left you... you began to doubt. Now he asks and you give him the most noncommittal answer your brain can come up with. Not in that way.
