Declassified
Its out of the bag, the Stargate Program has been declassified.
The President thought she had a hard job breaking the news to the public. It doesn't compare to what I – and many others in my position – have to do now. I've given notice to many next of kin whose loved ones died in the service of their country. As someone in a leadership position I have learned long ago how to handle those visits: one must be sympathetic yet remote, kind but matter-of-fact.
Some of us made it home, remembering those we lost along the way. And even though they were all heartbreaking deaths, one in particular will haunt me forever.
I will always remember his eyes, so full of gentleness even as the life slowly left them. I could have looked away, but I owed him this much: the last person he ever saw was someone he trusted with his life – and with his death.
Part of me died with him that day. And that's why I'm here now: to tell the truth, to ask for forgiveness, to bring home that last message.
