Paying Tribute
The young Ravenclaw followed the corridor, skipping around the rubble and humming a friendly tune. Despite the spring in her step and that music resonating from her diaphragm, she was quite sad indeed. They may have been unapparent, but the tears were flowing down the cheeks of her heart.
Lord Voldemort may have finally been defeated and Harry Potter may have survived it all, but many did not. Many of her peers, allies, and companions were slaughtered and were no longer able to walk this earth.
One of these fallen warriors was Colin Creevey, who fought until he was defeated. She did not know much about the boy other than he was in her year and a Gryffindor. She remembered him being a member of Dumbledore's Army with her and that he had a fondness for photography, but they never had an in-depth conversation. She did not know about his parents, any relationships he could have had, what subjects he enjoyed, anything outside of the common knowledge. She rather regretted not taking the time to learn more about him; maybe they would have been really good friends if she had given him the chance.
The idea of her never having the opportunity to speak to him broke her heart. She would never again hear the voice of Colin . . . or Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and other multiple individuals who she will never have the pleasure of meeting.
Luna ascended the stairs, the tears traveling to her eyes the closer she got to the Gryffindor common room. She and Colin were not close, yet she believed he deserved a proper goodbye. She would have gone to his side in the Great Hall, but that would not have been her place. His corpse was surrounded by mourners and having it visited by someone who was practically a stranger would not have been appropriate.
She approached the portrait hole to the Gryffindor common room. The Fat Lady was not guarding it; she was probably celebrating with one of her fellow portraits and Luna could not say she blamed her. She would have enjoyed participating in the festivities, but first she wanted to pay her condolences.
Luna extracted a piece of parchment from her pocket and the wand that was secured behind her ear. She muttered an incantation as she pointed her wand at the parchment. The object in her hand began to transform into a symbol of beauty. The bottom of the parchment danced and twisted into a green stem while the remains folded in and colored themselves red. Within a matter of seconds, the paper was a blossoming rose that would never wilt. The texture was still that of parchment, but Luna believed that it was not always the feel or scent that made a flower beautiful; it was merely the sight of its petals resting atop of the stem while they shine in the sun and dance in the wind.
Smiling sadly as two tears cascaded her cheeks, Luna put her wand behind her ear again before kneeling in front of the empty portrait. As she did, she thought of Colin. She imagined the conversations they would have had, the laughs they would have shared, the friendship that would have ignited, and the adventures they would have had.
Disheartened that she never took the chance to converse with the boy, she laid the rose down at the base of the portrait. This was the moment when she had to let go of what was never in her hands and to bid farewell to a friendly stranger. The tears caressed her cheeks as one fell from her face and landed on a petal as she rose to her feet.
"Goodbye, Colin."
Without another word, Luna Lovegood turned her back on the rose, skipped down the stairs, and began humming another friendly tune.
