AN: Written for the Great Maze challenge on the Harry Potter Fanfiction Challenges forum. My prompt was "write about someone who does something without thinking."
Lavender was bored out of her mind.
She'd only been dating Ron for a few weeks now, but already, she could tell that he clearly wasn't the guy for her. They were simply too different, she thought. It would never work out.
That particular day, they were sitting in the Great Hall, eating dinner. Lavender, tired of listening to Ron's conversation with Harry, which was something about Quidditch, decided to get away.
"Won-Won, I have something I have to do. I'm going back to the common room," she said, kissing him on the cheek.
"Okay, bye," he said.
Lavender headed out of the Great Hall and headed towards the Gryffindor common room. Distracted by her thoughts of Ron, she walked straight into Seamus.
"Oh, Seamus, I'm sorry," she said. "Are you okay?"
"Fine," he said, with a good-natured grin. "I mean, you're the size of a pixie, Lav. You don't really do much harm."
Lavender gave him a half-smile.
"Hey, is everything okay?" he said, frowning at her. "I mean, you're usually more delighted to combat my witty banter."
Lavender sighed. "No, I'm not. And your banter is most definitely not witty."
"See, there's the Lavender I know and love," he said. "Come on, what's wrong?"
"It's Ron," she said. "I mean, he's nice and all, but he's not really my type, and I have no idea how to end it."
"Can't you just tell him that you're breaking up with him?" said Seamus, looking slightly confused.
"I hate awkward conversations," said Lavender. "I wouldn't know what to say."
"Well, you'd better think of something fast," said Seamus, gazing over the top of her head. "He's headed our way."
"What should I say?" panicked Lavender. "Quick, think of something!"
"I don't know!" said Seamus.
"Please, Seamus! Help me!"
"I said I don't know!"
"Anything!"
Suddenly, Seamus moved closer and pressed his lips against hers. Instinctively, Lavender wrapped her arms around him for balance and melted into his embrace. For a long moment, they stayed like that, kissing.
Abruptly, Lavender realized what she was doing and broke the kiss, jumping away Seamus. "Ron!" she called out, looking around, but he had already vanished. Clearly, he had seen the kiss.
"Seamus!" she said, turning to face him. "Why did you do that? Ron must be furious!"
"You said you wanted to break up with him!"
"Not like that!"
"I'm sorry!" exclaimed Seamus. "I just… did it without thinking, okay?"
Lavender sighed. "Well, I suppose it was affective, but I still feel bad."
"Honestly, Lav, I'm pretty sure he likes Hermione," said Seamus.
"Really?" said Lavender.
He nodded.
"Well, that makes me feel a bit better," she said.
Seamus grinned. "Besides, you must admit, it was an excellent kiss."
"It wasn't terrible," said Lavender airily.
Seamus raised his eyebrows. "You know you kissed me back, right?"
"I did not!"
"Yes, you did."
"Did not."
"Did too."
"Oh, fine," said Lavender.
"You admit it!"
"I admit that I might have," said Lavender. "Maybe I did and maybe I didn't."
"Good enough for me," said Seamus, smiling. "Want to go to Hogsmeade with me next weekend?"
"Definitely not," said Lavender, also smiling.
"Great," said Seamus. "Pick you up at eleven?"
She couldn't help but laugh. "Fine."
"See you then!" said Seamus, walking away.
Lavender smiled.
Her day was suddenly much less boring.
