Happy Birthday Sam

"Happy birthday, Sammy!"
Sam looked up from his laptop, a tinge of pink staining his cheeks. He'd hoped Dean had forgotten what day it was, or at the very least would've ignored it. His big brother knew how many bad memories the second of May held for him.

"Dean..." he began but the elder Winchester held up a hand to stop him from continuing, his eyes full of understanding.
"Don't think I don't know how crappy your birthday has been in the past Sammy, but for me it's a day to be thankful for; it's the day my baby brother was born and not all the crap in the world can ever change that.
So get your skanky ass off that chair, cos tonight we're gonna celebrate," Dean ordered. "You're 36 today and that means we've got at least forty other birthdays to start chalking up good memories and replace the bad before we kick the bucket."

Sam stared at him with an ironic expression on his face. "You really think we'll still be here in another forty years, Dean?"
"Why not, we've died more times than I can remember, so I reckon we're due some extra alive time," Dean quipped, a cocky smile on his face.
Sam huffed and shook his head at his incorrigible big brother, but somehow his heart felt lighter. Maybe Dean was right and it was time to toss some of their bad memories into the trash and begin to make better ones.

Dean noticed the change in his sibling's attitude and knew he'd taken the right approach with Sam this time. They'd go out and get high.
Even after all this time Sam still turned into a happy drunk when he had too much alcohol in his system and there was nothing more exhilarating than baiting his little brother the next day.

Sam slipped on his jacket and Dean threw an arm around his shoulders.
"We're gonna make this a night to remember, Sammy," he grinned, pulling him towards the door.
Sam sighed and tried for a bitch-face, but there was no heat in it. Tonight he was determined to enjoy himself in his big brother's company and chalk up the first in a series of happy memories; the supernatural be damned!
