Chapter One
It was only a few minutes to midnight. He should be here soon.
'Happy Birthday to me,' I thought. It was dark in the house, my whole family was sleeping, and I was waiting. I looked out the window. A car came, and passed. Disappointed, I returned to my bed and looked over at my luggage, an old duffel bag containing most of my clothes and my guitar case. 'Surely he'll be here soon?' I thought. It was nearly seven minutes past now, and I was starting to panic. I wondered what my parents would think when they found my letter on the kitchen table the next morning, but it didn't matter. They wouldn't be able to do anything about it, now I was now officially an adult.
I heard a car coming down my street. It stopped on the sidewalk and a figure jumped out and ran to the garden gate. I grabbed my bags, tiptoed down the corridor, past my parent's bedroom, and down the creaky stairs as quietly as possible. I dropped the letter on the table and went over to the backdoor.
He was standing outside and in the light of the moon. I could just about make out his facial features, his strong cheekbones and delicate mouth. Without thinking, I dropped my bags and flung my arms around him, making a loud noise. I felt his arms snake around me, his lips on my neck. 'Shhhh.' He whispered. I could practically feel the smile in his voice. 'You're here', I kissed him, put my hands in his hair. We made for the car, hand in hand, giggling like schoolgirls.
Mikey and Ray were waiting in the car.
'Happy Birthday, Em!' Ray was driving, his unruly hair was silhouetted against Gerard's pale face. Mikey beside in the passenger seat. Gerard and I were sitting in the back. I'd grown up with Mikey, he was my closest friend. The nerd, quiet and awkward, way too interested in fictional animals. He didn't mind listening to me vent about my frustrations with my parents, who were strict and very conservative, and I enjoyed reading his poetry and listening to him practicing his bass guitar. He was kind and had a strange sense of humour, which was somewhat like my own. I loved him like a brother.
'Mikey!' I smiled. 'I've missed you.'
'Hey Emmakins, I've missed you too!' he smiled back.
'Emmakins?' Gerard smirked. 'When did you become 'Emmakins'?' I smacked him. He laughed.
After about half an hour of conversation, Mikey had fallen asleep.
'Where are we going?' I asked. I didn't recognize the neighbourhood we were in.
'To the tour bus, our last gig was at a club around here.' Ray replied.
'Aah.'
I turned to look at Gerard, who was looking at me. He raised his eyebrows. I smiled and stroked his hair.
