Finnick jerks awake, immediately noticing Annie at his side, her eyes looking up into his. She was worried; he could tell that much already. These nightmares weren't getting any better, and no matter how much he had tried to convince her that they were, she could tell that he wasn't telling the truth.
"You can talk to me, Finn." Annie says, her voice quiet. "Please, I think it would help you."
Finnick closes his eyes; his hands are shaking, but he pulls Annie into his arms anyway and rests his forehead on the top of her head. He hoped that maybe- just maybe- if he could get out of telling her the extent of his nightmares, then he would eventually forget it. Still, he knows she's right; explaining them to someone did seem to help, as he saw with her a few years ago.
Finnick chooses his words carefully, not wanting to send her back into her memories of her Games. She pulls away enough that her bright green eyes stay in contact with his for as long as he's talking, taking in every word he says.
"When you were gone a few months ago, I was worried that someone had managed to tell you things while I wasn't around, although I knew that wasn't possible. Mags wouldn't have told you anything and none of the victors back home knew anything about the plan, but that didn't stop anything. I kept thinking that maybe someone had gotten ahold of you and told you some of the things you know now." Finnick sighs and runs a hand through her hair. "Every night, I saw you die, and it got worse with every one. It was Mags, too. There are still nights where they come back, and that's what happened tonight." Tears are now falling from Finnick's eyes, his shoulders trembling, but as much as he'd like it to stop, he can't just make that happen. "You're all I have left, Annie. I need you."
Annie cups his face into her hands and wipes away his tears. Gently, she kisses him, wanting to let him know that she's there and is planning to always be there. When she breaks the kiss, she takes his hands into her own, noting that his fingertips were more calloused than she had remembered them being a year before.
"I need you, too." she says softly. "You bring me back to reality. I know I'm safe when you're around."
Finnick closes his eyes before he pulls her into a tight hug in which she doesn't hesitate to return. He leans back onto the pillow and lets Annie rest her head on his shoulder.
For the moment, they both had to admit everything was right in their world, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
