Double Take
Prologue:
There was a soft muffling sound of crying. The warm summer rain splashed against the windows of the hospital. The room was white.
Chelsea stood next to her Nanny. She was dressed up nicely; they were going to a restaurant to eat lunch after visiting Mama and Daddy. Her hair was braided into two braids and tied at the ends with yellow ribbons. She wore a light blue dress with yellow daisies on the bottom of the skirt part. Her tiny green shoes had a teeny daisy on the tip.
Looking up at Nanny, Chelsea tugged at her long brown skirt. Nanny looked down at Chelsea with tears in her eyes.
"Nanny why are you crying?" Nanny bent down to face Chelsea. She had long brown hair, the same color as Chelsea. Though her eyes were a soft purple while Chelsea's were her mother's blue.
"I just caught a cold. That's all dear nothing to worry about."
"Oh. Ok." Chelsea faced her parents again and stared at them a long time.
"Nanny?" Nanny was back to standing up. Nanny looked down.
"Yes dear?"
"Are Mama and Daddy cold?"
"What do you mean Chelsea?"
"Well, the blankets are pulled up over their faces and their sleeping too. Mama always said if your cold then you should take a nap to get warm."
"No dear. Mama and Daddy aren't cold."
"Then why do they have blankets over their faces?"
"Later dear. Time for lunch." Nanny slowly began to lead Chelsea out of the hospital. Chelsea didn't hold Nanny's hand; she was a big girl so she could skip on ahead.
When Nanny checked out the two of them Chelsea was eagerly waiting for Nanny to go faster. Today they would go to the café that served ice cream with their meals.
Nanny slowly came over to Chelsea and took her hand. They stepped outside into the soft summer drizzle with no umbrellas or coats. It wasn't raining when they first got there.
