Hey Baby

Pam Marks

"Hey baby." Even as the words left his mouth he knew they were not his to say. So many years had gone by for him since the last time he had talked to any of them.

'That's really all I wanted to say.' Smiling Tommy turned from the computer screen after Facebook had once again not found a shred of anyone named Kimberly Ann Hart or Jason Lee Scott.

Stretching Tommy looked around at his life and sighed. He had a good life now '...well I got a good life now...I moved on...so when you cross my mind I try not to think about what might have been cause that was then...' Taking in a steady breath Tommy slowly wettened his lips as the song sung from his speakers in a low dull tone that he almost did not hear.

"A Phlebotomist. Wow." Tracing the outline of the word on the cover of his textbook he swallowed hard. He would be finishing up school in two weeks and then would be a fully fledged Phlebotomist.

'Not really where I thought I would be ten years ago but neither the less here I am.' Taking another sip of his Mt. Dew he smiled as he remembered ten years ago.

'Ten years wow. Has it really been that long since...that autum night outside the county fair. When two strangers shared a night and in the darkness found a light...' Letting his words fall away he took a seat on his bed 'He asked her twice to come along and they said good bye at the break of dawn...'

Laying back on the bed the tirty four year old smiled as he imagined his eyes young those of a twenty four year old then they got older aged to that of a thirty four year old. Snapping out of his stuper he sat up on the bed and sat his Mt. Dew can down on the bed side table beside his bed 'It's all kids and young new hot shots now. I gotta give it to them though they have it just like we did. I remember talking to someone that was my age back then and thinking wow thirty four how neat and she took an interest in me! I wonder if it was the same for them...yeah at one time I was a new hot shoot too that needed to learn how...'

Letting the thought drop off steaply he wondered to himself if he would talk to one of the new hot shots? If he would be the one thie time mentoring to him or her? Them. His team. His crew. With them sometimes he felt as though his could fly and sometimes he swore he did.

Hey baby. The wind seemed to whisper the saying through out the room to no one and everyone. As he smiled his eyes began to drift shut who knows maybe in his sleep he would see them again and it would be like no time had passed at all. Maybe he would be that seventeen year old again that had the world in the palm of his hand and knew it. Maybe...just maybe..."Dad."

Looking to his left smiled at his twelve year old daughter standing there as she was the reason he had left that world behind for ten years "I hate having my period!"

Chuckling he swallowed as she to seemed to revert in time to the two year old she had been when he had made his decisions all those years ago "Oh baby you're ok."

Making a noise as she always did his daughter stomped out of the room. Wow what a neat young lady she was growing up to be. That had been unthinkable back then too his little girl...growing up...twelve...tearing his head away from the side of the bed where his little girl has stood moments before he felt the pull of the kid he had once been and smiled.

Hey baby.
