A proud father

Hailey and Steve definitely weren't how Stan imagined his children would turn out to be. Having a wife, two children, one boy and one girl, yes, that was always in his mind. But in his mind, his son would have been his reincarnation, a true athlete, the epitome of being masculine. His daughter would have been a cute little girl, quiet and sweet. That sounded old fashioned, but that's how he had always thought his family to be.

Life had decided to be ironic.

Hailey was just as liberal as he was conservative. She was vegan, she wanted the NRA to shut down, she was all about helping others, caring for the minorities and defended so many causes he lost count. She didn't believe in God, supported abortion, the medicinal use of weed... All while out of his two children, she was the one to look like him the most, having inherited his black hair and his eyes.

Steve could be called a utter disappointement. The only thing society like Stan envisioned it would praise about Steve was his brain. Steve was a geek, Steve was physically weak, he hated sports, he was lazy and too sensitive for his own good.

Yes, out of his two children, none of them turned out to be the child he had dreamt of.

However, he wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

Despite all the differences he had with Hailey, he was proud of her. He was proud to have fathered such a strong woman. Hailey knew what she wanted. She could be brave, resourceful, patient. And she was just as passionate as he was about the things she cared about. Stan was so glad he could call her his daughter.

Despite Steve being the opposite of who he was, Stan was proud of him too. Steve was intelligent. He'd go far in the world, in this society where brains were praised for the higher careers. Steve's good heart meant he always wanted to do his best, because he just wanted to make him happy. And just like Hailey, he was so passionate about what he loved and he could beat his laziness and put an armour around his sensitive little heart for things to go his way. Stan was glad he could call him his son.

Yes, Hailey and Steve weren't the children he had envisioned raising.

But he loved them from the bottom of his heart and never once in his life had he wished to trade for other children.

Because despite their flaws, through his fatherly eyes, Hailey and Steve were perfect the way they were and he was meant to raise them.

He thanked God to have been granted this honour.

The End
