*This is a one-shot from the night Spirit was in the corral at the Indian village after escaping from the Army fort.

(This is later that night, after Little Creek has already taken Rain out, so Spirit is alone during this.)

Freedom. It was the sacred word of all wild creatures, perhaps even of the Two-Legs. The buckskin stallion snorted at this thought. It was Two-Legs who had stripped him of his own freedom and had tried to take away his pride. It was Two-Legs who had taken him from his homeland. It was Two-Legs who had purposely deprived him of food and water for days under the blistering heat of the sun. Yet...

The stallion lifted his head and drew his attention toward the Two-Leg village. The one they called Little Creek had sought freedom like the stallion did and he had obtained it - helping the stallion in the process. These Two-Legs seemed...different. They moved as a herd, in the stallion's eyes. Unlike the other Two-Legs he had met and come to hate. The other Two-Legs had moved onto him like a pack of wolves downing their prey. Their leader, the Colonel, was as vicious as any predator the stallion had ever come across. The swiftness of a rattlesnake, the strength of a mountain lion, and the cunning of a coyote.

The stallion's gaze drifted in the direction of his homeland. Home. It seemed so far away, yet so close. The stars above were always the same. Unchanged from the view he had had on the plains that fateful night. It felt as though that had been long ago to the stallion. So much had happened to him. An unwanted feeling began creeping over him. Loneliness was something he had never felt before the most recent events. The stallion stomped a hoof and shook his mane as if he could shake the feeling off like a pesky fly. He had to hold on to that overwhelming desire inside of him. The desire for the future. It was called hope. And the spirited stallion was holding on to that hope for freedom.

A/N: This was written for a challenge. Spirit was and still Is one of my favorite animated films (next to the first Balto ;) ).
