Moments of Fate

The warmed spring air floated around like the brilliant clouds, reflecting the sun's muted glow.

Jasper was picking at the grass; Edward could hear the rip and tear of the blades between the marble fingers.

"Your worrying."

It was a statement, not a question. And Edward knew he was right.

"I can't help it."

Jasper sighed, looking into the forest trees around the small clearing.

"The fear almost cripples you."

Edward was uncomfortable talking about this, but he waited for him to continue.

"But you want her, Edward," Jasper kept ripping the matted ground, "I can feel that too."

Eyes, lighter now than he own, were swimming with emotions. And unlike Jasper, it was harder for Edward to read.

"Yet again," He looked out towards the sky, away from Jasper's glittering body, "I can't help that either."

"Don't you think I should know?"

Sadness was trickling inside of his voice, and so Edward spoke, "Like I could hide it from you."

"I deserved to hear it from your own lips," He looked down, "In your own voice."

There was a moment of silence that would be forever seared into Edward's memory. One of regret, sadness and a bittersweet longing.

"I'm sorry, Jasper," the vampire closed his eyes at the sound of his name, "I tried so hard to keep this from happening."

"Fate," Jasper finally smiled, looking up into his eyes, "Is a damned thing."

Edward smiled too, "You aren't angry?"

He shook his head, "Not anymore, no."

"You know what this means?"

"Of course," He scoffed, "I'm not completely obtuse."

"So you understand."

Jasper nodded, thoughtful as he next spoke, "She really is beautiful."

"Yes," Edward breathed, "She really is."

Author's Note: This is from a prompt Tia gave me, the wonderful mrsremusjohnlupin, whom I beta for. She is going to be giving me many more prompts, as I must say they are REALLY good and helpful. I'm not giving her a choice in the matter. I hope she, and you, like it as much as I do. Reviews are love. -Delta
