The Space Between Us

Prompt: The Space Between Us

She was pressed up against his body from head to toe. They hadn't been this close in weeks, months, a fucking lifetime, it seemed like. He'd been lost and stupid, she'd been hurt and angry, and it had all been too much. The space between them since Rueben's death had been as wide as an ocean. She'd really started to believe that nothing could close it.

Then she'd walked into the bank to process a scene and found a gun to her head. She and Danny had been tied up and locked in separate closets for hours. She had no idea if he was being hurt or tortured like the last time he was held hostage. She'd been so scared, and then, when the bastards that held them had tried to take her from the bank she'd been able to get the gun away and kill them.

Still in the closet, Danny had heard gunshots and feared the worst. He'd busted his way through the door just in time to see her shoot the last of their captors.

She'd untied him and he'd gathered her in a hug….they hadn't let go of each other since. Not during the arrests, not during the questioning, or the doctors checking them out, not for a single second.

Now, they were in his brand spanking new apartment, seconds away from christening his couch.

"Wait, wait, Montana," Danny said, pulling back slightly.

"Oh, I missed you calling me that," Lindsay said, ignoring the other words he'd said and kissing his neck.

"Oh yeah? I missed calling you that."

"Good, say it some more….with less clothes." She began tugging at his belt and for a moment, he almost forgot what he was going to say, but then he reached out and grabbed her hands.

"Wait, we have to talk a second."

Her hands dropped away from him, "What? Are you…do you not want to do this? Is there someone else?"

"What? No, of course not. There's never been anyone else, Lindsay. I just…this morning we were barely talking and now we're…I just want to make sure you know what you're doing."

"I don't care about this morning," she said, "All I care about was that I almost lost you today…again. Snake bites and explosions and fucking gangsters and we keep almost losing each other and I want…I want…"

"What?" he asked, his hand sliding over her cheek, "What do you want baby?"

"I just want you," she said, her eyes full of unshed tears, "I just want us again, Danny. I…I love you so much. You don't have to say it back, or feel it…I just…"

"I love you, Lindsay. I've loved you longer than I can even remember. When I was a kid I watched one of those movies where the guy says he loved the girl before he ever knew her and I thought it was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard until I met you and I knew what he meant. You're the only one, Lindsay. I'm so sorry I hurt you."

"I know you are," she said, her hand sliding up and down his arm, "And I know that we have to deal with it and that we're still going to have hard times, but…I just want to be with you tonight. Can't we just start all over again?" As she spoke, she glanced over at his pool table.

He smiled, "Yeah, we could start from there again. Although we were just in a hostage situation. We might not have enough energy to do it all again."

"Speak for yourself, cowboy," she said as he picked her up and carried her to the table.

"That's some big talk there, Montana."

"You bet it is," she said, "Now, stop yakking and make love to me already."

He smiled, leaning in to kiss her softly, "Forever, Lindsay, forever this time," he promised as he deepened the kiss.

That morning the space between them had been vast and now…now there was no space at all.
