Doesn't Matter

**********

You walk along the beach.

You don't know what exactly you're doing, except that Kairi is staring out into the sunset, and if she doesn't leave the island soon, she'll end up sleeping in that sandy hole by the big tree. And Kairi's mom, the mayor, always gets worried when she does that.

When you reach the dock, you call up to her. "Hey, Kai', the mayor'll worry if you're not home a.s.a.p!"

Kairi glances down, her royal-blue eyes sad, then turns her face away from you, back to the sun.

You sigh. You don't get why taking care of Kairi always falls on YOUR shoulders, but she's unhappy, so...

You jump up onto the dock, almost tripping over your own sandaled feet. She doesn't look around, so she doesn't see, and your dignity is still intact.

"Umm..." You tuck one hand behind your head. "Are you alright, Kairi?"

She doesn't look at you. You feel a little embarrased, trying to talk to her, face-to-face. Or face-to-back.

"What I mean is... I know you worry about Riku and Sor', and if there's anything you want to talk about..."

She still doesn't look at you, sitting on the edge of the dock, one foot dangling, the other tucked underneath her. But she does reply.

"I'm not going to be alright... until he comes back."

"Err... why not?"

She turns around, finally. "He promised... He promised he would come back. He promised he would give it back to me."

You try not to figet uncomfortably. She looks so sad, blue eyes shining with moisture, that you can barely stand to be there.

"Well... You know them. They're both lazy bums, you've said so yourself. They both love not doing what they should." You try to smile, but it feels so fake that you let it fade.

"I know... But I thought that I meant enought to Sora that he'd come back... right away..." She starts to cry. Silently, no great dramatic sobs, like how you're used to from Selphie, but it's even more uncomfortable this way. You plunk down next to her, and feebly pat her shoulder.

"Aww, Kai', don't cry. I'm sure he'll pop up eventually. This is Sora, right? He's always so thick-headed, if he actually does have his mind set on finding you, brick walls wouldn't stop him." You tentatively give Kairi a half-hug, one arm wraped around her shoulder as the last bit of red drains from the clouds, leaving the two of you sitting in the cool twilight.

She sniffles, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "I guess you're right..."

"Of course I am!" You beam at her, releived that she's given up on being wishy-washy and tearful. "I'm alway's right! Didn't you know?"

With a little chuckle, she thwaps you lightly on the side of your head. "Goofball." She stands up, and smiles at you. "Well, I gotta go home. Mum'll be worried about me."

You roll your eyes. "That's what I said in the first place!" you say, but she just smiles at you, and jumps down into her boat, and starts to row away.

Maybe what you said doesn't matter, but at least she smiled again, right?
