Chance
Author's Note: 9 Days until White Collar comes back! I can't wait!
Warning: strangeness. Probable out of characterness
Disclaimer: Sadly, I do not own Neal… or any of the other characters in White Collar.
"Probies!" senior field agent Williams called. Peter Burke and the five other probationary agents stood up. Williams laid six case files face down on his desk, and said, "You will each get your own case; you'll lead, and if you catch the guy, you make the arrest. This is to see if you can handle being an agent. Pick a case" he ordered.
Peter looked down at the upside-down case files. He didn't like this; he didn't want to get his first case by chance. He could get something as boring as a mortgage fraud case to some bank heist that would take years to solve. Finally, he reached down to pick up a file. Probationary agent McCalland's hand darted in front of Peter's and picked up the file that Peter was reaching for.
McCalland turned his file over and cursed under his breath, "Mortgage fraud." Peter reached down and picked up the last file. It was an art theft. Peter quickly scanned the file and smiled, there was already a prime suspect, and his name was Neal Caffrey. Peter thought this would be an easy case, and that this "test" would be easy to pass.
Eight years later, Peter looked out of his office to see Neal walk over to agent McCalland's desk and hand him a case file. Peter smiled to himself and thought that he should thank the agent. If Peter had gotten the original file, he would probably never would have made it from those desks to this office, and there was no telling what would have happened to Neal. He smiled as he realized that he met one of his best friends by complete chance.
Author's Note: I just watched a movie about how one little thing that happened completely by chance could have a huge effect. After that this just popped into my head. Please review.
