Imminent

"Spence."

She's confused as to why he's knocking on her door at seven at night, when they've been off work for two hours and he made it clear that he had plans with his girlfriend. "What are you doing here?"

"Uncle Spencer!" Henry comes running to the door, and it takes quick thinking on Reid's part to scoop him up before he launches himself at his godfather.

"Hey, Henry," Reid smiles, but it falls short of convincingly genuine.

"I wanted to talk to you," he tells her, swallowing, and she recognises the nervous look on his face immediately.

"Okay. Sure, but we gotta wrangle this little guy into bed first," she says, as Reid puts Henry down.

"It's only seven thirty!" Henry protests, and she rolls her eyes, walking him towards his room anyway.

"His obedience with bedtime suffered a setback when he learnt to tell the time," she laughs, missing the days she could tell her son it was time for bed and he'd more or less agree.

"I wanna play with uncle Spencer," Henry pouts, and she smiles.

"How about uncle Spencer reads you a story instead?" She offers, and Henry nods enthusiastically at the compromise, already heading for his bookshelf to choose a book.

"Where's Will?" Reid asks, as she closes Henry's bedroom door almost all the way.

"Working," she explains, as they head to the kitchen. "You want a coffee or something?" She offers, and he shakes his head.

"Kim's pregnant," he tells her, chewing his lip, and her face lights up.

"Spence!" She's grinning and hugging him, and he barely has enough time to register her reaction before he needs to reciprocate, hugging her back.

"Congratulations, that's so exciting!"

He nods, still unsure.

"You're not excited?" She inquires, and he shrugs.

"If I remember correctly you weren't rushing into work to announce to everyone that you were pregnant," he reminds her.

"Well, it was a surprise. The greatest surprise, but still, unexpected," she answers, gazing towards Henry's room. "Will was wanting to move so fast and I took a bit to adjust," she admits. "But I wouldn't change a thing."

"I know."

He continues chewing his lip, thoughts running wild in his head.

"How does Kim feel about it?" She inquires, and Reid smiles.

"She's excited. Already has a list of names."

"Do you?" She asks. "Have a list of names?"

"The probability of miscarriage is tremendously high in the first trimester, it's better to hold off on any emotional attachment until the second," he informs her, and she chuckles, as they sit on the couch.

"It doesn't really work that way, Spence," she warns him. "You can't help it."

"I just…" He falters, looking her in the eye. "What if it doesn't like me?"

"The baby?" She clarifies, and he nods, embarrassed.

"Are you kidding?" She asks, moving closer to him and placing a comforting hand on his knee.

"How is that possible? Henry loves you, you're great with him."

"That's different," Reid disagrees. "Given the amount of time I spend with Henry, there's very little chance of me doing something that will have any significant detrimental effect on him, but …" He trails off, still unsure. "What if I'm a bad father? What if…"

"C'mon, Spence. You'll be a great dad. You're already worried about the kid, it's a good start."

"You mean that doesn't go away?" He asks, afraid, and she smirks.

"Just you wait."
