Prologue; Rule Breaker

Seventeen year old Ava Bailey was never the type to listen to rules. She did things her own way, walked to the beat of her own drum. She would skip her lessons, stay out past her given curfew, and would sneak out of her quarters. So punishments weren't a new thing to her. She was constantly grounded, constantly helping this department or that one with odd jobs too unimportant to have an actual worker do. Breaking rules is what got her into crazy situations.

Leaving the city without permission and going on a test ride in the newly fixed Jumper with Ivan had seemed like a good idea at the time. That was until the controls malfunctioned and the 'newly fixed Puddle Jumper' turned into the 'once again broken Puddle Jumper'. Which landed her in helping the Science Department for the next week and a half.

Helping the Science Department always consisted of her fetching tools and coffee for the scientists until they got fed up with her trying to touch the machines they were working on. Then they would send her off to work with Ivan, Rodney's assistant and her best friend, to mindlessly turn on which ever new device he was working on.

-------------------------

"Ava! Don't touch that!" exclaimed sixteen year old Ivan Reed as he grabbing her wrist and moved her hand from the button on the Ancient machine she was about to touch.

"Well you wont know what it does if you don't turn it on. Besides, it's what I'm here to do. So lets just get on with it." Ava replied hotly. She tore her wrist from his grasp to cover her mouth as she coughed.

Ivan grimaced and leaned away from her, "Go wash your hands, you ll get germs on my things. Besides, I'll know what it does after I'm done translating this script. Not everyone is as impatient as you."

"Shut up. I can't help it if I'm sick," she said scowling while rubbing her hands on her jean covered legs. "and besides, just pressing the buttons is much more effective. See?"

With that Ava quickly reached passed Ivan, who had grabbed her wrist just before she touched the Ancient machine in front of them. The machine light up and hummed before engulfing the room in a bright white light. Ava closed her eyes to shield them from the light as her skin began to tingle and from the gasp the came from Ivan, she could only guess he felt it too. The tingle slowly turned into a burn and just when she felt she couldn t take anymore it stopped.

She opened her eyes only to re-close them and flinch away as the device burst into sparks, obviously fried. Straightening out and opening her eyes she noticed nothing had changed. Well, almost nothing. She was in the same room with the same people as before but the scientists that were working mindlessly were now staring, mouth agape at the two teens. All except for one Dr. Rodney McKay, who was pointing his handgun (that he kept in his desk drawer 'just in case') at them with one hand, and the reaching to his radio. His hair that had been almost to his ears only second before along with his lean stature had considerably changed

"Who are you?" He said harshly, eyes narrowing at them untrustingly. The sound of boots coming closer from down the hall seemed enough to snap Ava out of her stupor enough to see Ivan slowly raise his hands.

"I'd like you to know, that this is your fault." Ivan muttered darkly to her.

Ava raised her hands as the soldiers rushed into the room and surrounded them. She coughed before replying with a quiet, "Yeah, I know."
