Without looking back I bolt. People, mutants, are swarming around the exit, all-pushing through. Every one of them confused. "Self destruct in T minus one minute." Came across the speakers. At that everyone at the exit went into panic mode. As soon as they where out one of the flock members would guide them to a safe spot. Away from the explosion. Only experiments are allowed to get out.
A squeal of fright comes from the bundles in my arms. Wrapped in a mass of blanket, a carrier on my back also, are babies. I found them and had to knock out a white coat just to get them out. Five of the ten babies where dead.
"Self destruct in T minus thirty seconds." The automatic voice choruses again. Looking ahead about ten meters I see the experiments are all out. Rushing the last bit I hear a cry. A child's voice. Swirling around I spot a little boy with brown skin and hair. His eyes are red from crying and scars litter his skin. Sprinting to him I pull him to his feet. He stares with gold eyes and holds my hand tighter.
"Self destruct in T minus ten seconds… nine… eight…" The automatic voice starts counting. Without thinking, the boy beside me, we both go for the exit. "Seven… six…" Bursting out the doors, the ground is cleared of people. Experiments. "Five… four…" Turning to the right we head for the trees. "Three… two…" Comes from a speaker on the outside. A dark figure comes up beside me and sweeps the boy off his feet. Arranging the carrier so that my wings will pop out, I jump into the air. "One… this area will now self destruct." White light blinds me, as the pressure of the blast goes through me. We fly higher into the air, aiming for a clearing were the rest would be.
The last thing I see as I look back at the explosion sight is the annihilation of a place that has done us more harm then good.
