Lil' D Needs a "D"

"I got no father, Sunny."
Five words. All it took was five simple words. They were five words that pierced Sunny Bridge's heart. He, a music star himself, had grown up with a mother AND a father. What his student, friend, and a fan of his music had told him just made him fall apart.
"Lil' D," said Sunny, "do you know who your father is?"
Lil' D shook his head. "No, my momma told me that he left after I was born. I always assumed he left because he didn't love her." He started to get a little tense and tears swelled from his eyes. "And… and….."
Lil' D started to sob uncontrollably, and a lot of tears were flowing. Sunny could see that Lil' D was really hurt and upset. The boy's eyes were red with tears and he was sobbing uncontrollably.
"Sunny, it ain't fair! All of the other kids have dads, but not me! Everywhere I go, I see kids with their dads, and I feel left out. Why does it have to be me with no dad?" screeched Lil' D. He buried his face into Sunny's shoulder.
Sunny tried his best to comfort
Lil' D. There were many things he had known about Lil' D, but having no father was an exception.
"Lil' D, look at me," said Sunny. "You're not the only child in the world without a father. Around the world, there are many kids who don't have a 'D.' You are special to me, and I promise I'll never let anything bad happen to you."
Lil' D looked up at his teacher. His face was still red, but few tears were running on his face. "You mean it? Promise me you'll never ever let me go? Even if the world ended and we the last people on big ol' blue Earth?"
Sunny gave Lil' D a comforting smile. "I promise Lil' D, even when I leave this big planet that's blue as a certain hedgehog I know."
Tears dried from Lil' D's face. He had stopped crying after Sunny told him he would always be with him. "Thanks, Sunny. Everyone else with their dad, what do I do?" he asked.
The two musicians thought hard until they could think of something. Soon enough, Lil' D's eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. "Sunny, I want to ask you something that I think you're ready for. Would you like to be my father?"
Sunny almost let tears flow, but he had promised to stay strong. He held out his arms, "Lil' D, I'll be honored to be your dad. Come here, you!"
Tears flew from Lil' D's eyes. This time, they were tears of joy, not sadness. Like any son, Lil' D ran straight into Sunny's arms and hugged him tightly, not letting go.
Lil' D pulled himself from Sunny. Smiling at his "D," he gripped his teacher's hand. "Let's go, Dad."
Sunny smiled back. He couldn't help but accept it. He laid his hand over Lil' D's. "As you wish, son."
Together, the two musicians departed for the Father's Day Assembly at Westely.
