New York. More than any city. More than any person. A place that even lacking the centuries of history that Paris, Rome and London had had managed to earn the same almost mystical glow about it. It was an entity. So much wonderful diversity and complexity hiding beneath a glamorous surface. From Manhattan to Brooklyn there were so many worlds to conquer.

Blair sat silently while admiring the perfect view in front of her. It almost made her forget about everything. Not only the day to day problems but about nature and how things happened in a world governed by gravity and laws of physics. Because, as she contemplated the kaleidoscope of lights, she saw herself in a different world. A micro cosm separated somehow from the world around it. Like it was too good for it. Like it didn't belong to it.

There are few cities about which you can say that they have personality. New York had personality. And that's why Blair loved it so much. New York was separated from the rest of America. There was no room for 2.4 children and family cars. No time for wishful thinking. Everything was faster. Mediocrity had no place in this city. It was a city that didn't tolerate anything but the best and the worst and those who were either climbing their way to the top, struggling to stay there or dramatically falling.

The words sin and immorality weren't in this dictionary. Action and reaction. Trying to determine the former and learning to control the latter. Always leaving you awe struck with the first impressions it made but never revealing all its secrets.

New York. So much vitality. Impossible to comprise. Too much power to be trusted in the hands of one person. You can't try to figure out how to respond to New York. You just have to hope it responds well to you. You mistreat it, you pay. You love it and it graciously loves you back. Because even though its attention driven and self centered persona craves to be loved, it is never thankful for it. IT fully deserves that love. It does not have to earn it.

It is impossible to defeat it. No matter what you throw its way it will always recover and wearing the same fashionable mask it will heal itself. Alone.
