Annie gazed out the window of the cab, watching as the last of the Mardi Gras party goers cleared the streets.

A hint of a smile crossed her lips. It had been a good one. Not just Mardi Gras, but the best day in general she'd had in a long time. Not having to worry about doing anything that would upset Sonny. For once she was allowed to be free, to enjoy herself.

Davis was a character, to say the least. He was boisterous and obnoxious. But she'd had a lot of fun with him. She didn't mind his quirks, except when he had lit up a doobie, she immediately flashed back to Sonny's face.

Davis had that same carefree, childlike charm that first attracted her to Sonny. But Sonny had become disenchanted, hardened by Katrina. He didn't care about the music anymore. All he was concerned about was the next time he could get high.

Davis wasn't like Sonny. He'd never let life dampen his good time.

She'd thought about kissing him. She knew he wanted to kiss her too. Why not? In her heart, she and Sonny were all but a distant memory of what they used to be together.

But something had held her back. Not the right time. Plus Davis mentioned having a girlfriend. Sort of.

Annie knew she would probably never see Davis again. But he gave her something she needed that night, a chance to celebrate life instead of be afraid of it. That wasn't something she'd ever regret.

It had been a pretty good Mardi Gras.
