Things changed, but the more they changed the more they stayed the same.
(It's hilarious.)
It had been ten minutes. Less than ten minutes. Ten seconds maybe, or one second. Things could change just that quickly. And wasn't it funny, wasn't it useless?
(Most things were.)
Penny was a crusader. She had been since the day she'd decided she was going to stop feeling sorry for herself and do something, but every time she looked back it felt like she never knew when to pick her fights. And here she'd finally picked the right battle, she'd finally triumphed, and look at what happened.
She was bad at this, it turned out.
(What a tragedy.)
A few minutes ago she'd thought that maybe she might die of embarrassment if her maybe-not-so-sweet-after-all boyfriend didn't stop bragging. It was funny - it was hilarious - now that death was actually happening, because she couldn't quite seem to grasp that it was actually happening. But here she was with that odd foreign feeling of metal sticking in spikes out of her and nothing had seemed quite so forever or quite so surprising. That was surprising too, when she thought of it. Forever, death was forever. She was gone now, and after she was gone things would begin to change again, and everything that she'd done would be swallowed into chaos.
(That's hilarious too.)
But the most hilarious is how, despite the shock and despite Billy's whimpering nos and despite everything else, she couldn't quite make herself believe that any of this was happening.
And
yet
it
does.
I would greatly appreciate it if you'd take the time to drop a review and tell me what you think!
